Hey NZ bees!
we are thinking of honeymooning in your beautiful country. We can only really go in July and I know it’s your winter. We were thinking of travelling round the country (or part if it) for maybe 3 weeks. I’m a bit if an adrenaline junkie so I’m guessing a trip to queenstown is a must…my question really is, what would typical weather be like? Will be be rainy and cold or might if be ok? I was in Australia (sydney) in 2006 in June and the weather was ok ish, nice some days and rainy and cold others…
would you recommend coming at that time if year, or should we come for 2 weeks in April or Oct? (I’m in UK so it’s rather a long trip…)

Suuuup!!! Our country is awesome huh !!!!! 😀
winter it can rain but u can also get some amazing beautiful days that are still cold and fresh but the sun comes out. It’s luck of the draw here even in summer!!!! It was raining bad last week but today and yesterday was sunny and nice!!!! October is getting warmer with spring and all the beautiful blossoms are out but it’s honestly kinda hard to say.
Def go to queens town and Wanaka for some adrenaline stuff and if your up higher hanmer springs has bungi jumping and water rafting etc too.

Depends where you are, I live here but we did a road trip around South Island in June 2011 and though we had rain on the West Coast (to be expected) in land around Wanaka, Queenstown etc and the East coast it was COLD, but dry and crisp so quite good. Plus we got super cheap accomodation everywhere because it was so quiet and you’re more likely to get upgrades at cabins etc. October would be ideal but I personally wouldn’t come for less than 3 weeks because it’s SOOOO FAR from the UK.

I’m from chch (east coast ) west coast rains all the time but we get really nice but cold winter days , further south you go the colder but i have been to queenstown in winter and it was cold but so stunning. The north island is a bit warmer/more humid slightly

Thank you both for the info, sounds like July might not be too bad after all! Yeah 3 weeks is just too much if a squeeze I think! Will do a bit more research but your replies have been awesome!

I’m from originally from Christchurch but have been living on the Gold Coast in Australia for 7 years. I’m overdue for a trip back home but I will have to wait until the Dec/Jan school holidays as I refuse to go in Winter its just too bloody cold for me!!!!
It’s definitely a lot colder in Winter and it does rain a little more but I’d suggest googling average temperatures and rainy days so u can compare it to what you’re used to. Just remember not to base your decison on what Sydney was like as it’s a lot warmer in Australia than NZ.
That said if u think u can deal with the colder weather in winter the 3-4 week option would probably be the best one if you’re coming all the way from the UK. The bonus of coming in Winter and particularly if you’re heading to Queenstown is that you can ski 🙂 Another great place I love in NZ is Hannmer Springs, its about an hour and a half North of Christhurch, the biggest drawcard there are the hot pools but they also have bungy jumping as well.
