If you want to stay on the beach and in the heart of the city then stay on Waikiki beach. Shopping and dining are right there. I have stayed at the Outrigger, The Trump, The Moana Surfer and The Royal Hawaiin. All are nice but the last two were the best.

I would take a day and go to the Polynesian Cultural Center. It’s about a 30 minute drive and they have a great luau. If you’re foodies you should go to Alan Wong’s or if you are just looking for a more casual place Duke’s Barefoot Bar is fantastic.

If you are into activities hiking diamond head is a must and going snorkeling in Hamawana bay was one of my all time favorite moments in life 🙂

@jneden:  It depends on your budget.  The Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is a funky little property right across the street from the beach.  The historic Royal Hawaiian & the Moana Surfrider are really cool, unique properties.  The Hyatt has great rooms & amenities.  The view of the sea turtles from the Sheraton can’t be beat, either.  The spa-like ambiance throughout the Halekulani is a nice indulgence.  Or, if you are looking for condo properties, the Aston Waikiki Beach Tower is a wonderful alternative to a hotel.

I would stay at Turtle Bay Resort. It is on the North Shore of Oahu. It is a little slower pace then most places in Waikiki. Also you would be close to PCC and other wonders of the north shore. Keep in mind Oahu really isn’t that big, so you could stay in the north shore and day trip down into Waikiki then come back and relax at your resort. Also I would check out Kualoa Ranch, it is also on the north shore, they shoot a lot of movies on the property. I really enjoyed horse back riding while I was there. Hope this helps. If you need ideas for more cool stuff to do just PM me.

Oh Gosh, I think the Moana Surfrider is one of the most beautiful hotels ever!  I use to have clients in Hawaii and got to stay there quite often.  Just wonderful. Beautiful lobby, great outdoor seating in the back. The older section rooms are nicer I think. There is this incredible old Banyan tree (huge) in their courtyard that makes the setting gorgeous.  Check it out.
