@UpstateCait: It really is infuriating. It’s a similar abortion. If your religion doesn’t allow it, making it legal doesn’t mean it is mandatory.

Oh my goodness I’m so excited!! I just feel like not allowing it to happen, imho, is only allowing for a certain form of segregation to occur. What makes them any less” human than us that they don’t deserve the same rights as we do? I just wrote a paper on this for English class.

American policies have always been based on Christian values. I’m glad that he’s making the bold step to seperate the two. I’m all for gay marriage!

I thought it was that he and Eric Holder have decided that the Justic Department is not going to argue for DOMA. So, they are not going to defend the constitutionality of DOMA. I think Congress would have to repeal it before it can be declared unconstitutional.

@bRooklynRocks: Yeah DOMA is still technically good law and it’s still going to be enforced. But the Justice Department isn’t going to defend the constitutionality because they say it isn’t constitutional.  The Supreme Court could declare it unconstitutional (unlikely at the moment) or Congress could just decide to repeal it based on constitution issues.

@Natalieh86: Ha ha. I can’t even, oh God, Congress that is cutting spending for Planned Parenthood and any other thing they can get their mitts on (except largess to big corporations) would not be repealing it. Not now or anytime soon. Congress. Ha ha. HA!

Yeah probably not until the average Congressperson was born after 1975 or so.

Not surprisingly, NotFroofy and I favor the legalization of same-sex marriage, and are eagerly awaiting its passage by the Maryland legislature.

As for the religious argument, no religious institution in Massachusetts had been required to perform a same-sex marriage.  By contrast, my own religion (Reform Judaism) is on record as being in favor of equal marriage rights, but is still prohibited from performing same-sex marriages in all but a few states.  Thus, religious freedom is enhanced, not limited, by legalization of same-sex marriages.

As a bisexual woman, I am totally for this!!!

I think I will end up marrying a man anyways (because, um, honestly I’m not sure I could completely live without d*ck, hahaha), but would love to have the option of marrying a woman if I should change my mind.

I’m totally for it. Everyone should be able to marry whoever they want no matter what the sex of the couple is!

I am for gay marriage.. but @CaitMarae: I don’t  think they decided it was “icky”, nothing is against the law for being “icky”– it has to do with people’s view of the purpose of marriage, I’m not saying I share in those beliefs but I’m sure they go a bit deeper than that

Yay Obama! Perhaps we’re closer to equality than I thought!
