@jayce: hmm I see… Thanks for the info! My opinion that civil unions are unnecessary when they essentially fall under the umbrella of marriage is probably not going to change any time soon. But interesting to know.

@SuperBrook: Marriage started as a religious institution.

This is actually not technically true, historically. Obviously, marriage has been associated with religion for centuries–but basically, before the Middle Ages, marriage was a civil matter, mostly having to do with negotiating and joining property (it continued to be so right up until pretty recently, but I digress…). I’m generalizing a bit but the attitude back then actually was that marriage should be kept out of the Church since it was so “mundane.” It was when religious leaders realized they could raise revenue by requiring marriages to be performed in a church that marriage started its long association with religion.

@janie-janie: Opposition to gay marriage is definitely waaaay more common among people 50 and older. Pew Research has some cool graphs showing how age, education and religious affiliation affect people’s opinion of gay marriage, I’ll have to dig around the internet.

I’ve personally always thought banning same sex marriage was one of the most (if not THE most) barbaric things about the US. Considering the fact that MY own religion was actually created by a king who wanted to get divorced and have it recognized by his church, I don’t really think anyone can act all high and mighty about it being against their religion. But that’s just my opinion, everyones entitled to their own.

@SuperBrook: That’s exactly the way my husband feels about it. Let any two consenting adults who want to be legally joined have a civil union recognized by the government, and “marriages” should be conducted and recognized through religious institutions. He thinks it would be an easier concept for some people to swallow.

@jayce: allowing gay marriages in other countries and calling it marriage hasn’t led to the downfall of society, and I don’t see why it would need to be called anything but what it is.

It was a very happy surprise to read about this decision. As far as I know, he wasn’t (at least loudly) being pressured about this (like with DADT). This is a great step, if not the end of the fight. Like

@Miss Fish my best friend is a lesbian, and her being able to marry her girlfriend would not in any way, shape or form affect my marriage with my husband, and it pains me that she can’t.
