Yes, of course, to wherever they choose to go

Yes, of course, but not the most expensive place. I'd pay for a state school (or comparable) only.

    No, no obligation to pay

Yes, but only the government mandated sum. (Edited to add this option belatedly)

I had to pay my own way because my parents couldn’t afford to pay for my college education.  Did my parents wish they could have paid my way?  Of course.  I’m sure at one point, they had planned on paying my way…but circumstances change.  I don’t think they were being unsupportive or that they were/are bad parents and I would never blame my college loan debt on them.

I was extremely lucky and had my parents help me pay for my education.  My parents and I had a deal that if I paid for my tuition, they would pay for my living expenses and everything else.  Where I’m from, the tuition was the least expensive part of university.  I am so grateful that I was able to come out with a great education and no debt.  Especially since my husband has a school loan that he has to pay off because his parents weren’t able to assist him as much.  I think that when our child(ren) are ready for post-secondary education we will try to assist them as much as possible, but am not going to completely stress out if we can’t pay for everything.  I think that it’s good for children to have some sort of responsibility with (at the very least) some sort of payment.  As I’m sure many of you will agree, we definitely start appreciating things more when we pay for them ourselves and realize how bloody expensive things are.
