I would send a message on Facebook to the people you are planning on inviting.  If you post something publicly to Facebook or Twitter you may end up getting addresses for people that you hadn’t planned on inviting and that may cause some hurt feelings.

You should create an excel spreadsheet and get everyone’s addresses now.  If your guests are from out of town and flying in, they should get their STD about 8 months in advance so they can arrange for traveling.  STD for local guests 4 to 6 months and the actual wedding invitation is 3 months before the wedding.

@soccergurl:  I’m doing mine in August, but we have more than 80% Out of Town guests. I already have people asking me when they are getting one, since we have a 2 year 3 month engagement they’ve been waiting a long time already. So I think September is fine if you have a lot of guests who need to book flights.

ETA: I divided the guest list into five smaller lists and assigned each list to one person to get the addresses: my mom (her side of the family), my dad (his side of the family), Fiance (his friends), Future Mother-In-Law (FI’s family), and me (my friends). My parents each sent out mass emails to the people on the list to get their addresses.

We are doing ours as soon as possible. We are getting our e-pics done June 14, so hopefully we will be able to have the Save-The-Date Cards ordered by July and out by August. out of about 130 invited people, only 21 are local to the area, and about half are from out of the country.. so yeah. LOTS of travel arrangements need to be made for our group.

WOW you girls are sending yours out early. I have my STD’s already and not planning on sending them out until January. I am worried if I send them too early then they will get lost and forgot about.

My Save-The-Date Cards are going out in August, around the 1 year mark. Hopefully we’ll have our engagement pictures back by then so that I can use one on the STD and some on our wedding website. I think about 90% of our guest list is out of town, hah.

@MsPanda:  i second this. This is what I will be doing for the addresses I need, a lot of addresses I’ve been able to get from my mom, grandma, Fiance, phone book, etc.

I wrote private messages on facebook, or texted when necessary.  The rest I got from my mom’s address book or called my aunt.  And once I emailed my cousin that got married last summer for a few, since I knew she probably had them handy.

I started a spreadsheet in Google Docs and then shared it with my mom. She then put in all the addresses she has, and she can add to it as needed. I started the list last year even though we knew we were leaning towards a 2013 event because I used it for Christmas cards. I used to be really haphazard in how I sent them and who got them each year, but now it’s all nice and organized. The fact that it will also come in handy for wedding invitations is just icing on the cake.

I wrote down all my invitees’ names and then went through my address book to see whose addresses I already had. I then began messaging them invidually on Facebook (but some via e-mail) for their addresses, just saying, “Hi! Can you send me your address? Thanks!”. Some asked why I wanted it and I told them why.

I also marked down when I contacted them. That way, if I don’t hear back from them in a week or so, I can re-contact them. Thus far, only three people have yet to respond and I still have three more people to contact. Fiance, on the otherhand, has more than a dozen people to contact and it’s driving me crazy that he hasn’t started the process yet!

I had an Excel spreadsheet that I started.  Which I slowly built up over time.  You will need addresses for the showers a few months before the wedding.  So keep that time in mind.

I wouldn’t post on Facebook/twitter because you’ll get people sending you their address that you might not have invited and then feel awkward for not later.  I would either call, text or send a private email.

Also I had my family and his family send me all the names of the people they wanted to invite and any addresses they already have.  I put all of them in the Excel list and then highlighted the ones that I didn’t have an address for. Then I emailed the spreadsheet to my Fiance, Mother, Dad and FIL/MIL and SIL.  Between all of them and myself we got it done really easy.

The topic ‘obtaining addresses’ is closed to new replies.
