It stands for Old European Cut…it’s the predecessor to the round brilliant. They stopped making it around 1940. It has less facets than the round brilliant so it’s a little more “flash”-y as opposed to “shimmer”-y, if that makes sense.

I think they’re gorgeous – I’m dying to get an OEC pair of earrings! Hinted at that for a wedding gift- we’ll see if Fiance was paying attention!!!

I have an Old Mine Cushion cut for my engagement ring – I love the vintage look of the old cuts!

This video shows the two types next to each other 🙂 I love OEC’s, I saw one in person and just fell in love…

I have an OEC vintage ring, I think it’s from the 1920’s. it’s beautiful, but the girdle is sharp, making it more prone to chipping. (the girdle is the edge.) I was unhappy when I discovered mine had tiny chips, but it’s practically unavoidable in old diamonds. after I learned that, I decided to love my ring just the way it is. I love my shabby chic vintage furniture, so why not love my shabby chic ring? besides, the chips are not visible to the naked eye.

@littlegraykitten: nope, it’s just not a very good photo.  I think the pinkness of my skin is making the ring appear pink in the photo. it’s 18k white gold, and it’s kind of a warm color because it’s so old. if there ever was rhodium plating on it, it must have worn off ages ago. I’ll get it plated again right before the wedding, so that it matches my wedding band!
