I’m building a new bed frame (which will hopefully solve my and SOs storage problems) so I was out on our apartment porch working with power tools when the super cute little girl who lives up and over an apartment comes out to say hi. We exchanged hellos and then she asked me what I was doing. I told her about my project. She follows up with “Well why isn’t your husband doing that?”
Me: “Its more fun for me this way.”
Her: “What’s your maiden name?”
Me: “I’m not actually married.”
Her: “Oh. Then when is the wedding?”
Me: “I don’t know yet. He has to propose first.”
And then her mother came out and took her inside. And there I stood awkwardly with SO was just an open window away.
Anybody else have a similar story about a stranger unintentionally making you feel super awkward about not being married yet?

Aww. Maybe you should send her his way and have her ask why. Kids are adorable :).

Uh yeah. Like six or seven months ago I was serving at Red Lobster (I think that’s still acceptable in college, right?) and these four ladies about my age (early 20’s) were seated in my section. One of them blurted out of nowhere as I was taking their drink order: “I AM SO HAPPY!”
I said “Oh? Why’s that?”
She responded “I’m engaged! I’ve been engaged for awhile, but I’m engaged and happy!”
I smiled at her and congratulated her, trying to change the subject back to drinks, when she looked at my hand and said “You’re not married?”
“No ma’am, not yet” I said.
She said “Oh, well you’re cute, I’m sure you’ll find someone soon.”
Uh. Rude. I had a boyfriend, and he is now my fiance, so now I just think it’s more silly than awkward haha.

Well, it wasn’t by a stranger, and it was really funny. My uncle is a really funny guy, and my SO recently came to my grandmothers house where we were staying and I told my Aunt about how I THINK he’s going to pop the question, and we were sitting there eating dinner and goofing off, when he asks us, “So when’s the wedding?” We looked at each other and my aunt told him, “He has to ask first!” Well the night went on, and about 2-3 hours later… He asked the SAME question. (I can’t keep anything to myself, my family must know what’s going on in my life!)

I’m engaged now, but something like that happened to me when I was waiting.
An older Russian woman walks dogs in our neighborhood. She’s very sweet and she always chats to SO and I when we see her. One day, not long after we first met her, I saw her when I was alone and she casually asked how my “husband” was. I politely told her that we were just dating, not married yet. But then she did the same thing a few weeks later. I corrected her again, but she kept doing it. Now that I’m engaged, it’s pretty funny, but back then it was pretty annoying!

I had a similar thing happen. I was teaching Sunday School several years ago, and one of my students asked me how old I was. When I told him, he asked me if I was married. When I said no, he turned around and said, “You better hurry up and get married!” I was shocked! I stared at him and took a breath before telling him that was not a polite thing to say to anyone.
But for a second, right after he said it, I wanted to yell back, “Shut up! Your parents weren’t even married at my age!!” Thank goodness I took that breath!

Ahh, the innocence of children…look on the bright side, it probably would’ve been more awkward if an adult had said those things…:)
