Because the “Bees” here seem so intelligent and full of good advice I have to ask what to do in a situation the likes of which I have not encountered in 15 years in the work place. . .
A former co-worker continues to spread malicious gossip about me almost a year after we worked together. I have no contact with this woman. I am careful never to say anything about her.
We only worked together 2 weeks before I left our mutual place of employ. I was still in the probationary period on the job and due to their employee policy had to resign immediately instead of giving 2 weeks notice. I do not normally leave a job within the first 90 days, however this place counted the 90-days as 18 work weeks (5 day). After about 10 weeks it was obvious this job was not going to work out at all, and after enduring many weeks of verbal abuse I finally resigned when the company requested to requisition my medical records to review. I had also been told less than a month after taking the job that I would be laid off due to budget constraints within my first 6 months of employ, so Darling Husband and I felt that would probably happen before I was able to collect unemployment.
Now more than a year later I continue to be harassed by persons from this organization. First I received phone calls accusing me of employee theft. It got so bad Hubby told them to go ahead and file criminal charges, we had a lawyer already lined up. Well they couldn’t because they had no proof that I had stolen a thing (and I wouldn’t), it was just a scare tactic. Then for several months I noticed things that were in my private emails had a way of becoming public. After consulting with an IT person we determined my web email and possibly my FB account were being read. Unfortunately this email was the account I use on my resume. I had numerous employers that were very interested in me at first who suddenly “were no longer hiring” for a position and just behaving strangely, which I chalked up to the weird economy but now I wonder . . . (Now that I have a new email addy I’m actually getting some interviews, thank goodness.) Not to mention that people whom I barely know have come up offering their condolences for my “illness” and offering “to help in any way they can”. Apparently someone has first spread rumors that I am physically ill and is now spreading rumors that I am mentally ill. Since I have not worked in almost a year I’m hearing that we are losing our house and having to sell our posessions (Not true and also not true, except for some stuff we weren’t using that we unloaded on Ebay.) Most hurtful of all is that we had a pet pass away of very advanced age and now it is being suggested that we did not get him proper care.
The worst part is that I keep hearing this one person’s name being brought up. She claims she “speaks to me all the time”. When I say that I have not spoken to her, people ask me why she would lie? Then they start talking to me in the voice people reserve for the very young and the very unstable. I even went so far as to get some mental health counseling and was told that I don’t have a thing wrong with me. The counselor actually suggested filing a court case, but the IT guy and a lawyer friend of mine said it would be almost impossible to win.
I do not understand this at all. I think that maybe my former boss is behind it but I don’t understand why it would continue so long? I also do not understand why this other employee would be involved? My worst nightmare is that I will finally land another decent job only to have all this continue and possibly cost me the position. Does anyone know what I can do?
