jazzybee83 : We haven’t had an exchange since but when we do, I’ll be ready. (Also, I totally support your decision to do that with the hat).

deannamarie :  I have to admit when I saw those, my intial reaction was man those are gorgeous, why would someone complain about getting those!!! I wouldn’t give those out, I’d keep them for myself or gifts to friends/famiy, there’s no way I would risk trading them.

Worst was scratch off tickets. I get that there’s a chance you could actually win something, but more often than not you’re left with nothing.

deannamarie :  Those are beautiful! I wish I had the skill set to make ornaments or some decorative items.

It doesn’t necessarily matter if it’s “white elephant” or “secret santa” people may still gift you crap. I’ve had a mixture of experiences, but back in 2014 my work did white elephant and I was left with a .25 garage sale sign. Last yr I refused to participate in any holiday gift games, but my class really wanted to. I felt like the grinch and i knew if I didn’t then it would be uneven so I caved. Limit was $10 (I spent almost $20 towards my secret santa) and I was gifted a hard sucker and crusty, old, 3 in 1 bath oil. I was in aesthetic school…old, crust formation at the top of old bath oil/body wash…really?

We do a white elephant game at the holiday party Darling Husband and I host. The price limit is $10, but we encourage regifts. It’s meant to be funny, not really about the gifts, and our friends know that by now.

Darling Husband and I actually regifted a really nice Santa plate/cup set this year that someone gave us. Other gifts included (new) board games, a coloring table cloth (that a family with a toddler snagged), candles, a funny wall-mount bottle opener, candy, and so forth.

Maybe it’s just my group, but the silly gift (a “deer butt” bottle opener) got the most laughs and was stolen the most often. I ended up with a pretty three-wick candle.

I have a whole thread on this, so you know how I feel.

Last year I received 4 bottled flavored sodas (Boylan Bottling etc.) and a 4 pack of coasters…which are nice, but I have enough coasters. I “gave” a bag of stuff from the dollar store, but stuff I hoped people could use (a mug, Swiss Miss hot chocolate, oven mitts, candy, etc.). We had a $10 limit I think.

My office doesn’t do one but our friend group does. It’s this weekend. Still not sure if I’m going to do it or sit out.

My office White Elephant (some call it Yankee Swap) is this afternoon so I’ll report back! I’ve played 2 times before and I’ve been pleased with my gifts. The first time I walked away with a Libbey trifle bowl that I used as a fruit bowl (we had just gotten engaged and moved into our house) and last year I brought home a cute, decorative candle holder and candle that is currently on my kitchen table. I bring gifts that I’d actually want, like a nice bottle of wine or chocolates. This year I’m re-gifting a Bath & Body Works set of handsoap and hand cream that I won at a baby shower because I’m not fond of the scent, but it’s Stress Relief (eucalyptus spearmint) so I think it will go over well in our office lol

When I was a teen there was this ugly fake yellow rose with fake butterflies covered with a glass dome that everyone traded every year. Finally my step mother got it one year and I stole it and have kept it since.

ALSO, in the future, take the screaming goat from Amazon. I usually bring something absurd and off the wall, because of course I do.
