Not sure if it’s different in every state but at the DMV all I needed was my marriage license and the print out that I received from social security. I did both in the same day

I am doing the same!! Although our state isnt so strict they didnt even ask for an ID at the SS office! Live free or die New Husband lol. I got the SS/DMV(license stuff done), and my cc done, bank shortly, work shortly hopefully, professional credentials soon. But I am officially Mrs. R!

dk121915:  This is great advice! When i did my name change, the DMV did not need mail with my new name on it. They accepted mail with my old name on it, since I had my new social security card and marriage license, and my old ID said my old name on it!

The only place I have to add to the list is your work so that your tax documents from them have your new name on them, to make sure you get your return/they get filed properly!

Back when I changed mine 18 years ago I was able to speak to everyone (government, municipal, CC companies, etc) by phone and fax my marriage certificate to them. The biggest hassle was my passport and drivers license  because they had to be done in person at their office.

You need to change your name on the title.  If something happens and it’s the wrong name, you’re giong to have a hard time.

As for SSA — I just needed the certificate and my old SSA card.  I didn’t need any info my parents, especially not their SSNs!

I found the name change process to be absurdly easy.  It took me 2 hours total from SSA to DMV.  The rest I did over the phone or internet.
