Hey bess I just wanted to post this because I am excited that my Fiance and I finally made a decision on what to do with our last names!
Backstory: My FI’s last name is a very, very common last name…one that could be comparable to “John Doe,” and it is also his mother’s last name, not his father’s. To be honest he doesn’t have the closest bond with his mother, and he has always HATED his last name because it is so common and he has never had a connection with it whatsoever. We knew that no matter what we wanted to have the same last name as each other when we get married because we both grew up in families that had at least 3 different last names always living in the same household, and we just think it would be nice to all have the same last name. So at first I offered to take his last name, but he refused saying that he did not want his last name anymore. So then we thought about him taking my last name, becaues it is fairly unique and cool-sounding, but his name doesn’t go that well with it, and for some reason one of my family members was offended by the idea. We would also never hyphenate because that’s not our style, and our last names are so different that there was no way to combine them in away that sounded good to the ears….
SO! We finally decided on the idea of creating a new last name together. At first I wasn’t receptive to the idea…I said something along the lines of “I just don’t know that I would feel connected to it because it would have no meaning…if we did create a name it would have to be PERFECT!” and what does my Fiance do? He comes up with the perfect last name!!!…but I won’t post it until we get married, sorry! Fiance knows Latin and I know Spanish, and what he ended up doing was taking a two-word Latin phrase, smooshing the words together, and then taking a couple of letters out to make it sound beautiful! The phrase is also very similar in Spanish, and it is a phrase that has deep meaning for the both of us. I am so excited!!!! So we are going to have him change his last name first, and then when we get married I will change mine after.
I know a lot of people are very traditional and think that this is crazy, and in fact a couple of family members had some rude remarks towards it. Honestly, I couldn’t care less! It is the perfect solution for us, it has meaning, and it makes us happy!
Also as a side note: My Fiance is in the process of writing a book and is almost finished, and there is no way he would use his “John Doe” name, so changing the last name is also a career-related move. It is for me, too because I want to be a Spanish teacher and the last name sounds completely Spanish, so whenever I am interviewed it can’t hurt to help provide the visual of a Spanish teacher in that way!
That was longer than I thought it was going to be, sorry! Just wanted to express my excitement and encourage all the bees out there to do whatever makes them happy!
