This is a good post. I was curious as to what to budget for the officiant.

It can definitely change depending on the time spent, the distance traveled, the number of guests, the lenght of the ceremony, whether or not there is rehearsal, etc.

Here in New York City I usually start at $300 and work higher depending on the needs, but they usually include unlimitted communication.

I guess $400 is right; the key is always to shop around and check review sites, etc to arrive to the best officiant possible. More expensive doesn’t necesrily mean better service.

Best of Luck!

In Chi I have talked to all price brackets.  Here is what it included:

  • $??? – priest, they said no way, your ceremony should be in a church!!
  • $350 – retired priest, one meeting, rehearsal, robes,
  • $350 – reverend, one meeting, no rehearsal, wears a suit
  • $600 – reverend, one meeting, rehearsal, suit or robes
  • $900 – reverend, two meetings, rehearsal, suit or robes
  • $000 – pastor, 8-10 meetings, pre-marital couseling included, rehearsal, suit or robes

The last one is doing it for the right reasons.  The first few really felt impersonal for such an intimate ceremony.  Obviously we are going with the last one.  We will probably give them $400-800. Depending on how much I can convince Fiance to give them!!

We were married for free by the mayor of the city we live in.  We tried to make a “donation” but he told he wasn’t allowed to accept anything.

Wow, we got off pretty lucky! The officiant we contacted doesn’t want anything! He said that is just part of his job, we will do 4-6 one hour meetings before the ceremony. The beautiful church he is with is only 100 dollars! We plan on giving the Pastor something, I feel bad him doing it all for free.

@Chreee123:

In British Columbia Canada, we are going to pay $100 dollars for his service. That inculded a meeting before hand. If we needed him for a rehershal, it would be $25 dollars more.

Prices on here are really expensive, wow

Our celebrant/officiant was $350 in St. Louis.  This was for two face-face meetings, creation of our personal ceremony, multiple e-mail’s, rehearsal, and day of.  She also gave us a printed copy of our personal ceremony in a frame as a wedding gift.

We are paying $450 for ours.  Custom ceremony, meetings before, etc.  Compared to other’s I’ve seen here for a non-denominational ceremony, he is a steal.

I found cheaper ones, but I don’t want an officiant with a ponytail and wearing sandals.  Portland is not the most expensive city (I’m from the SF Bay Area) but things not cheap here either.

Mine is only $200 and this includes our own vows we select.

If he writes his own vows, it would have only been $100.

Don’t forget to tip him!  I read $50-100 is the “norm.”

Portland, Oregon here and we are having a Judge marry us. He charges $175. He charges extra for the rehearsal but our venue’s coordinator is taking care of that so we won’t need him there anyway. The other officiants I looked at were anywhere from $300-500.

For a Myrtle Beach wedding and a highly receommended officiant we paid $225. That was including rehearsal, day of and sand ceremony!

It’s absolutely amazing to me how people complain about the costs of the person who will MARRY you but not bat an eye at the ridiculous costs of flowers, favors, and other non-essential elements of the wedding. Get your priorities in order people! ugh.
