you aren’t overreacting at all! you booked him a year ago? i would think that would be before the other couple – he should cancel on them! either way, don’t back down from it.

Totally unacceptable.  You’re completely justified in being livid.

I would be wary of what is worse:

Your ceremony being performed by someone you don’t know, or your ceremony being horribly late because you didn’t allow the transfer of duty and your current officiant can’t get there on time?

Don’t get me wrong, he is way, way, way in the wrong (!!!) but given your new set of undesirable options, I would be careful to not be so steadfast in having him perform the ceremony that you then have other things go wrong.

@Jerseygirl23: ah, then there you go – you got him first, he needs to stick with you guys – simple as that. it was his mistake to double book, but he needs to suck it up and send the other guy to the later couple. if you can, try and settle it in person rather than over the phone/email. you and your FH as a united front will help keep him from making excuses that you can’t immediately shut down. good luck!

edit: ooh, just saw that you’re out of state. can any relatives go confront him about this? maybe since you’re far away he thinks you’ll roll over.

No, you aren’t out of line at all. This is your wedding ceremony, the whole reason we throw the whole big party is to celebrate the ceremony – it is the main event and the whole purpose of the day. For him to cancel this close to your day is not cool at all. He needs to honour his commitment to you – do you have a contract with him? Does it cover this sort of thing?

I think I would approach it by staying calm when speaking to him and just being as sweet as possible – the guilt will probably get the better of him if you appeal to his morals and his word.

I’m also getting married this Saturday (5 days -eek!) and can only imagine how stressful this would be. I really hope it all works out for you. Report back and let us know the outcome.

In any discussions with your officiant on this, I would refer to your contract.
