I’m looking into officiants right now (JOP I guess?) and they are all willing to completely customize the ceremony so that it is exactly what we want it to be as long as it includes the components that make it legal!

I think you have to sort out what you both want the ceremony to be like. If you go the Catholic ceremony route you will need to do the pre-cana.

@MsBrooklynA:  Basically it’s the lines where you say “I so-and-so do take you so-and-so to be my husband/wife” plus a few other things. I’m sure it’s similar but slightly different from country to country/state to state.

This is the package that our city has on their website and in the ceremonies that they have listed there are parts that are bolded which are mandatory. http://www.mississauga.ca/file/COM/CivilCeremonyPkgHSTVersion2012.pdf

ETA: We’re doing an outdoor ceremony on the patio behind the restaurant where we’re holding the reception. We both really wanted a customized ceremony even though Fiance is Catholic and his family would prefer a Catholic ceremony. We’re doing a church blessing to appease them.

@MsBrooklynA: We’re not doing it through city hall but I had that saved from when I wanted to elope and just run across the street (literally!!) to city hall.

I’m in the process of finding an officiant through the Humanist society. I have to still set up meetings with a few of them and decide on who we both like. I’m not really sure how JOP works, sorry! Maybe look into Humanist societies in your area since they have officiants.

We’re having a Reverend do our ceremony and it will be 100% secular. I think that’s what you mean when you say JOP. Your uncle from Rome COULD perform a ceremony for you outside.. you just wouldn’t have a Catholic wedding. I think you and your groom need to sit down and decide what you want and what you can compromise on. Is it the sacrament of marriage he wants?

@MsBrooklynA:  We found our Reverend online. We used a combination of The Knot, WeddingWire, and RentAPriest.com. A lot of them were already booked for our wedding day. When that happened, we simply asked if they could recommend other reverends. Our ceremony is 100% customized with inspiration from our reverend’s template book. He had every possibile combination of ceremony options, from what we picked, which is absent of any mention of God, to the holiest of holy blessing-filled ceremony.
