I think the dress will come out on the short side, even if it was hemmed for 4″ heels – even if you go with flats, that will still lift you off the ground a bit and usually when lace is altered, it can’t come back.
Plus, 5’1″ body types are much different from 5’5″ – think where the natural waist line is, etc. So if other alterations were done, odds are the dress wouldn’t fit you.
Stick with your new dress-love.

Just cause you love it in the photo’s you might not love it on you. I ended up with a dress that I never really thought I would.

i’d stick to the dress that you tried on and cried over. That is real. The dress in a picture can be very different in person, plus you don’t know if it fits you. with a mermaid, you’d definitely want to wear heels

Stick with yours! I think veciliawu is right that you’d want heels with a mermaid, and cutting the hem close is dangerous.
