Ok. So the other day we asked my FI’s aunt if she would be so kind to sing during our ceremony. She said yes. Yay. She has a great voice and sings all the time for the church, so it was a no brainer to ask her.
She then asked what song I wanted her to sing. I said I’d love Ave Maria, but not sure if that’s ok cuz it’s not in english. She said no prob, but then came, well which version do you want? i said what? There’s more than 1 version. I had no idea. So I went on youtube to find out and in fact there are two the Bach version and the Shubert version. I have heard both, but the Shubert seems to be played more often.
After listening online to several versions with string + singer, singer alone and string alone this is what I’ve come to. I like the string playing the Bach version better, but I like the singers singing the Shubert version better. AHHHHH.
What should I do?

i played both! one for seating of the mothers, and the other when we did flowers to mary.

I think the Schubert is more popular for vocalists for a reason–it sounds so great sung! Both do of course, but since your aunt will be singing you probably want to go with the one that showcases her voice.

The Schubert one is perfection, for me nothing else comes close.

@totheislnds: Oh good idea. I didn’t even think of doing both. I could do the bach version during seating or something and the shubert version during her singing.

@MsJeep23: Thanks MsJeep23. I’ll take your advice. When she sings it is all about showcasing her voice, so I’ll probably go with the Shubert version since I think that one sounds better sung.
I like the bach version more for string only because it sounds more “audibly interesting” (prob just made that up…but you get what I mean) played by a string trio/quartet.

Dude – Schubert – no question. As a vocalist, I enjoy singing it much more and since you are having a family member doing it, wouldn’t you rather use a piece that highlights your aunt’s voice?

I have a soft spot for Bach… 🙂 And I like his rendition of Ave Maria
