hahaha 🙂 The idea (the sugar coated non realistic idea, that is, lol) is kind of fun, like you have a really good friend who helps you with child care and chores, lol
The only way I would consider polygamy as long as it was clear that I was always the favorite 😛 JK
I was watching a documentary on polygamy that followed a real family- I think there were 4 wives and a TON of kids. The husband and the first two wives couldnt support them all ( all the wives were super fertile, he was getting more than one pregnant at the same time, year after year) so instead of cooling it on the kids, he said that one of the Stay-At-Home Mom wives had to go back to work…
When she did, the last remaining wife was home ALL DAY with 9!!! pre-1st grade and younger aged kids. I felt so bad for her!!

@jb20: I’ve seen the show. It is interesting because its a glimpse into a lifestyle that is considered “taboo”(I’m with you….couldn’t care less about what consenting adults do). Like so many other “reality” shows, I’m convinced a lot of it is scripted.
I also think Cody is a clown. I don’t know why he keeps having kids that he can’t possible give any real, individual attention to. He seems like he’s manic most of the time, and the mental health worker in me wants to medicate him.

I can’t stop watching that show! I love it, but HATE IT. I think my #1 issue with it is the money thing – they throw big parties, buy expensive things, and then talk about how they barely could afford their houses. I don’t even know how they make any money, does being on the show pay them? I doubt their jewelry business is that profitable…
I think the most interesting aspect is hearing the kids talk about their thoughts. Some are 100% for plural marriage, and some are SO against it.
Also, the sexism is totally evident. They freak out at the idea of a lady having multiple husbands, but multiple wives is A-Okay? I dunno. And they definitely don’t seem to have the same tight relationship that they appeared to have at the very beginning (but whether that is due to their facade breaking down after having the cameras document everything for so long, or if it’s really changing is up for debate…)

I want to believe that polygamy-in the right context-can work. I am sure there are polygamist families out there who have wonderful lives, and the people involved are truly happy and fulfilled. The man in this equation is interested in bedding and breeding, and has clearly shown he doesn’t care about parenting or developing real relationships with these women.
When Robyn married him I hated the way she was about it. She made her kids call him dad, carried on and on about this being a family, but NEVER worked on her relationships with the older kids which are clearly not in the best shape. She was more than thrilled to run into the family as the favorite, and wanted to boss this kids around. It’s sad. No wonder Logan doesn’t really come around anymore.
And yes, TLC pays them. I read somewhere once that it was $75,000 per episode per adult.

I love this show! I can’t tell you why because I think he is not attractive at all, physically or personality wise. Christine and Meri are my favorites. Robyn is my least favorite.

I don’t go out of my way to watch this show, but I will watch it if I’m channel surfing and its on. Hands down cody gives me the creeps. I would think he was a chauvanist even if he had one wife. I have no problem with plural marriage, I have a problem with Cody.
I am not sure if the wives are miserable or not. But I would sure love to know for sure!

@jb20: Yeah, but the whole religion thing is kind of lurking in the background; just like “Duck Dynasty” or “[Whatever Number] Kids and Counting.” I can’t really enjoy something too much when it’s lurking out of sight.

HOLY CRAP that is a lot of money. Okay. So I can see why they are not broke, then, but if they didn’t have the show they would be so screwed!
Why can’t they afford to help out more with Mariah’s education, then? I really hope they’re saving some of it, because people are going to be so over them sometime, and they’ll have to finance their ginormous family somehow…

I watch it if there isn’t anything else on, but it isn’t something I watch every single week. I just find the whole idea..odd. My Fiance and I were talking about the idea of plural marriage a few months ago and he said to me “I can barely handle you. Why in the hell do you think I would want to handle multiple woman.” At least I know I don’t have to worry about him wanting me to have a sister wife.

@jb20: the husband isn’t even that CUTE! why are these women chasing after him! ugh. i have never watched the show but the commercials annoy me so much! I just don’t see how you can have enough time, attention and finances to care for 3 women and all those children. but hey, i’m not gonna yuck their yum!

@jb20: I agree with you about the wives not liking each other. The thing that I can’t figure out is that in the first one or two seasons, I really thought they DID like each other. That was all before Robin entered the picture and they move to Las Vegas. Now it seems like Mari and Robin are a team and Janelle and Christine are on a team, and the two teams don’t like one another. I really feel like the dynamics have changed!

I watch the show because I find it an interesting insite to a different lifestyle. I think all of the adults love their kids and do their best to be good parents. I don’t think the wives have a very solid relationship. I think if something were to happen to Kody, they would each go on their merry way – I don’t think they’d stick together.
I also think Kody is a tool. He thinks he’s smarter than he his, cooler than he is, and wiser than he is. I’m amused at how he *thinks* he’s an alpha male but it’s pretty clear that the wives run the show.
I actually like Meri a lot. Yes, she can overreact sometimes, but I think she’s fun and doesn’t shy away from trying new things.
Janelle is clearly the smartest one and I think her and Logan are the most mature people in the family.
