I would buy a dress 6-8 months before the date

@bells: Well, that depends. If you have a clear vision of what you have always wanted and you think it’s not going to change, I guess you could do it about a year out. I went in wanting lace sheath/mermaid, I came out with a softly draped A line organza dress.

I disagree with some of the other responses. I am in your same boat. My wedding is July 2012, but I bought my dress this past weekend (which is super early), but my point is that when I ordered, the woman at the dress shop said mine will take 8 months to get in.. it would’ve been 6-8 months, but I had to order it in a shorter version than the sample. You also have to take into account the alterations.. how many times will you need to go back to see that it is the perfect fit, etc. So I would say at least 10 months out. I know some people buy their dress only a small amount of time before weddings, but 10 months will give you enough time to make sure it’s perfect. And it will depend on how long the dress you choose will take to come in, I’m sure each is different! Good luck!

i would start looking now (well because its fun) but i wouldnt buy until 6-9mths until the wedding because you might change your mind and new designs are released all the time

IF you do buy a dress – stop looking at other dresses immediately

I bought mine 15 months out but I knew exactly the style I wanted and found it and haven’t had any regret! I still look at other dresses because I think they are pretty but I LOVE my dress and wouldn’t change it for the world!

First you have to go through magazines and find a style you love. Cut out tons of photos. Save them in a special scrapbook or folder. Looka them, make notes, and add to the folder often.

Then toss the whole thing in the trash because what you love in a book probably won’t look half as good on as one you thought you’d never look at.

I bought a J Crew dress online only a month after getting engaged, and while I loved it, I eventually realized it wasn’t the right one for me. In retrospect, I should have definitely waited! Now I’m at about nine months before and I just found The Dress (again, online). It shouldn’t need any alterations so I’m pretty much good to go. If you’re going the traditional route, you’ll want plenty of time for your dress to come in and have alterations done.

So basically, it’s fine to start looking now but I would hold off on buying until within a year of the wedding.
