Hi Bees! A friend of mine has a problem with an old cat – it “goes” (poops) everywhere. This friend has been to the vet and has tried all the “tricks” (i.e. getting more litter boxes, spraying rooms with scents that smells bad to cats, putting food in the corners). Nothing works. And the cat goes everywhere – the poop spots are random.
She is at her wits end….this is an old, and rather unfriendly cat. The cat is 14 years old. The friend is considering putting the cat down b/c she is just sick of cleaning up cat crap from everywhere. The friend had the cat for the past 14 years and she is not coming to this decision lightly…..trust me.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? Putting the cat down is (obviously) the last resort, and we are hoping there is another option out there!

I have had a zillion cats in my life and I would say to simply put the cat down. One of my close family friends is a breeder and she would say several things. Most importantly, once a cat starts going outside it’s box it isn’t going to magically start going back in the box. Another thing, the cat is 14. It’s not like it’s a kitten and (as harsh as this may sound) it probably doesn’t have much longer. Unless she is willing to put up with it until the cat dies of natural causes, I’m not sure there’s much else you can do. I had to put my cat down when she was 8 because she was peeing all over the house. We tried absolutely everything and after 3 years, I just couldn’t take it any more. It’s sad, but unless you want to put up with poop all over the house, I’m not sure there is another solution. Hope this helps :/

@PrettyinPink45: Thanks for the reply. I also have 2 cats and I really don’t view cats as “property” (they are part of the family). Yet, I do understand my friends dilema. It is goo dto know that someone else out there is saying “it is OK to do this” And I do agree – this cat has anxiety and age issues…quite frankly, we all thought the cat has been at death’s doorstep for the past 4 years (which is why I think my friend dealt with this issue for so long)…yet she keeps hanging on…..

Has she tried a different food? Has she tried adding fiber to the food? We put unflavored metamucil on one of our cats food for years and the cat stopped pooping outside the box. Kitty was constipated. She could try a teaspoon of pumpkin too. Many cats love the stuff and its great for the bowels.

Cats can live well to 20 so I wouldnt simply say OK put it down. With age there can be health related issues. I would try Feliway and rescue remedy and also fiber sounds good to.
