I am getting married in July 2010 and I am trying to create an offbeat vintage wedding that will wow my guest without breaking our budget wedding :0)
We recently booked an old elementary gym complete with stage for dancing. We can’t hang stuff from the ceiling because it is new, but we can hang stuff from basketball hoop to hoop lol.
We are having an evening ceremony and dinner…so I would love to keep the curtains closed and create some dramatic lighting!
Thanks gals :0)

a photo of the space would be useful…. it’s hard to suggest decor ideas without knowing what the place looks like.

We are considering a gym because of its convenient locations. Some ideas I’ve brainstormed for my vintage/sweet wedding are:
-hang panels of fabric on the walls… mix and match or do it all the same. Drape some christmas lights or some origami chains to add some visual depth/interest.
-use some room dividers (if they’re ugly, drape fabric or pin up cute pictures from your childhood/dating life/engagement and little paper mementos (sweet notes, etc) to limit the space and make the room feel more cozy.
-use alternative lighting (little lamps on the tables, or patio lights draped from poles placed around the room to avoid bad gym lighting killing the mood. Candles on all the tables are good, too.

Thanks for the tips! Here are some photos :0)
Stage is on the left when you walk in
This is the entrance to the gym. We’ll be using the tables in the wall I think….I think it’ll be cute :0) Like a picnic almost….
This is the far corner of the gym looking at pretty much the space we have to work with! We have about 200 people coming..maybe a little less. The tables will all be full I believe.
This is the entrance into the building….stone. So putting stuff into the ground will be difficult.
There is a playground off to the right of this picture which we plan on utilizing for pictures as well as for the kids…maybe putting balloons out or something!
We are on a budget! And I don’t want to have a bunch of decor afterwards to resell! Thank you for your ideas :0)

I think you could string cafe lights and/or paper lanterns from the hoops (avoid the flourescent lighting of the gym).
You could do a cool photo booth on the stage, it would be out of the way and guests would see it.
For the entry way, I would do some simple candles along both sides of the path. As simple as those paper bag lanterns (kind of ties in with school lunch) where you just put sand and a tea light/votive in the bottom of a lunch bag. Or maybe buy some cheap votive holders. Or else you could use some plants but that would be more expensive.

What a fun site! Is it your old elementary school? I would check out the cafeteria tables for sitting in them in a dress… sometimes they are awkward for grown-ups… trust me… I can totally see a lovely picnic style tablescape … with school themed centerpieces like stacks of vintage schoolbooks with a “wildflower” freshpicked looking arrangement. You could also use the stage for the head table seating to give you additional room on the dance floor. (If there isn’t a back curtain you could probably rent a backdrop or create one! I definitely think white lights strung overhead with paper lanterns would be make it a fun atmosphere. You could also play on the school theme with posters of the “stars”
