Give yourself permission and time to heal. Stress is cumulative and can cause many physical symptoms. Those symptoms do not turn off like a light switch. Make sure you are blocking out time in your schedule for you- every day. Make time for exercise, meditation, relaxation and fun.

@orchidaloha:  Don’t just give it time. You have to be more pro-active than that.  Make appointments with yourself. Block the time out in your calkendar to take lunch, go for a walk, have a massage etc. You have to learn to put yourself first.

I have IBS issues that seem to flare up when I’m stressed. I’ve found that yoga really helps. I’m not sure it would do anything for you, but if you’re willing to try it might.

I don’t have any suggestions (unfortunately) but I am following for the advice. I felt like I could have written that myself…word for word. I do have to say that I empathize and that it’s incredibly difficult to make that time to destress and do it guilt-free, effectively, and not be distracted by all the things we “should” be doing if we were being 100% productive.

The one thing I’ve learned from other people is, like a PP said, destressing is VERY proactive. You can’t just sit and stress will melt away. You have to seek it out, make time for it. I’m still trying to figure it out myself and so far I’ve been failing…frequently…but I wish you the best of luck and I hope more people can chime in.

You need to be actively retraining your brain to react less extremely to your environment – it’s been stuck in “high alert” so long that it doesn’t know how to relax! Mindfulness and breathing exercises would help. Do you do yoga? That’s a great low-impact way to calm yourself down – even if it’s just a DVD!
