Why not late February????

Also, I am from LA and I LOVE college sports. Many of us do. Just saying.

I accidentally set my first wedding the weekend of Daytona’s Bike Fest and most of my guests had to drive through that craziness to get to my wedding Orlando.  Nobody complained but a lot of people left the reception early to drive home.

@OldMrsMcDonald:  I like her idea of sending out Save-The-Date Cards or reminders now letting people know it’s March Madness and that they should book their rooms ASAP.  While it’s nice to set aside room blocks, I’m pretty sure people would understand why you aren’t able to in this situation.  On the other hand, it may discourage some guests from attending the wedding; they may not want to deal with the craziness that’s March Madness.  I was in Tampa a few years back during March Madness and while it was ridiculously packed and crazy I was still able to win a decently priced bid on a hotel through Priceline (we ended up in one of the downtown hotels with some of the teams which was kind of cool.)

What about the same day and a venue further out from Atlanta?  Maybe some of your guests are also Final 4 fans, and would love to be in the area for it?

@beachbride1216:  And then there are people like me, who would be even more inclined to attend the wedding if I knew I could possibly attend the Final Four the same weekend. 🙂

Oh and my friend got married on Super Bowl Sunday and she didn’t have any trouble getting her guests to show up (although I’m pretty sure the crowd was more footie fans than NFL fans.)  It was also a great excuse to hurry people out of the reception venue since she had an early afternoon wedding.

@sportsgal31:  Right?

I think you drop the room block and let guests book themselves with a reminder that the earlier the better. Sorry this is happening to you, I know I would have never thought to check on March Madness

I also call BS on LA not being a college sports town, UCLA has won like 10 basketball championships and doesn’t everyone follow USC because you don’t have an NFL team? Not helpful, but just irked me.

I would really look into vaction rentals. I was in New York last weekend for a wedding and a bunch of my girlfriends got together and rented a wonderful apartment in Manhatten for so much less than a hotel would have cost us. There are websites like (vrbo.com) that make it just as easy a renting a hotel room. Plus we had a full kitchen and a ton of space (for Manhatten standards of course). You could always take care of the booking for key family members and then encourage different social groups to go in together.

@the boss of you:  @LGenz:  @sportsgal31:  @beachbride1216:

Maybe I’m just biased about the Final Four because I’m an alum of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the little engine that could over the past few years in the NCAA Tournament.  I’m lucky enough to live in Chicago where one of the regional rounds of set 2 and 3 were hosted in 2011 and I got to see them knock down Georgetown and Purdue!  I’d be so pumped to attend a wedding the same weekend as the Final Four and I’d most definitely try to get tickets, too.  How cool!

@atlbride2013:

Could you try a week or two earlier, like Mar 23 or Mar 30? My friend just got married last March (27th-ish) near Atlanta, and the weather was gorgeous! She had lots of out of town guests, too, and she didn’t say that she had any trouble booking hotels. Maybe you can make it work? Good luck!

Edited to add: sorry – just saw your earlier post that the venue is booked. I’m so sorry this is happening to you!

I really do think your planner dropped the ball here, not the hotel. The city locations for the Final Four are announced several years in advance, and the date is always the same. If she works in Atlanta, that’s something that definitely should have been on her radar screen.

Yeah, I mean, March Madness is a pretty big thing when the games are on 5+ channels…the hotel shouldn’t have lied to you like that, but the planner should have checked college sports too, ESPECIALLY in the south. What about the week after your original date? Or the week before? Final Four is only a few days.

ETA: I can relate though, our original date was our 5 year anniversary in September, then my school added on some more football games…home game + on campus wedding = not happening and we had to move it up almost a whole month.
