@MsInterpret: ah ok 🙂 I would definitely budget the money, outstanding debt, credit card and then since it was CS money i would feel a little bad spending the money on myself. I would be putting it in my childs high interest savings account so maybe when they finish school they can get a head start have a car etc or for student loans.

Wow!.That’s fantastic! This actually just happened to my best friend – it was her ex husband’s IRS refund. I’m sure the unexpected money will go a long way however you decide to spend it!

@MsInterpret:

That’s awesome for you. The child support thing must differ by state though. My friend’s dad was a deadbeat and owed like 15 yrs of back child support. Once she turned 18 the payments automatically went to her not her mother since she was legally an adult. She got money for a few years then he went back into hiding, if his house sells that money will automatically go to her which I think is so awesome.

@ccranetobe: Ditto. If it’s CS money it should go to bills, home maintenance and the child, savings account is a great idea.

@MsInterpret: It was from his & his wife’s tax return… in which he filed as married filing jointly. Since his wife’s name is also on the tax return and it is not on the order for child support the Fed Govt puts a “hold” on it for 180 days. This is to avoid the IRS having to possibly pay out twice (1st to me & 2nd to his wife) ; as if his wife wanted, she could file an “injuried spouse claim” to get her portion of the tax return.

My ex- and his wife even tried calling to get the hold “lifted”… BUT there’s nothing they can do. ugh!

@MsInterpret: I saw it online for a week and when it hadn’t been dispersed to my account I called them… spent half the morning on the phone to find out there was nothing we could do. Definitley give them a call Monday.

Needless to say I wasn’t happy… especially since it’s all I’ve gotten in the last 5 years… and yet I still don’t “get it”.. pfft… it’s almost laughable… not! lol

Oh.. and it’s not a Texas thing from what I understand, but a Federal Government IRS thing.

Hopefully this isn’t the case for you… Until you call though, I wouldn’t make any plans with it… just b/c I know that having our plans of getting the munchkin things & camp and then not being able to was REALLY frustrating and upsetting for me.

Sorry for being the bearer of damper possibilities… Hope you get all cleared up for sure Monday. Goodluck =)

@MsInterpret: Ours didn’t show until the end of May.. I think it depends on when they filed. And even if he’s paying I think it may depend on HOW MUCH in arrear he’s in…. I know for my ex- if they see ANYTHING with his name on it they’re taking it.

If I remember correctly my ex- called me in February to tell me they had filed and that we should have it soon…. I called about a month in a half later to see if they’d gotten/heard anything but hadn’t. Then he called at the beginning of May to say he’d gotten a confirmation letter and that it could take 2 weeks. Payment hit the Att Gen May 20th.

And yep… six months is what they don’t me.. so I guess it was intercepted in April.. got to the Att Gen in May.. and our hold is up in October.

Dumb IRS =/

That happened to me a few years ago… turns out they took his entire tax return and gave it to me because of back owed child support lol. I’m happy for you!
