clairhuxtable :  I would do them, they were free with our wedding package.

Since it sounds like you don’t have a photographer yet, I’d definitely recommend looking for one that includes them. Even if you don’t end up using them for anything wedding related, it’ll be a great practice run for being in front of a camera and getting to know your photographer, the goal being that your actual photo investment (on your wedding day) ends up being even better since you won’t have the shyness/awkwardness that can come with being photographed.

We’re not getting them done,  and frankly I’ve never seen the point.   I’d rather just look forward to wedding pics. We’ve already announced our engagement and I feel it would be overkill to send out a bunch of pics too.

You don’t have to splurge on them, but I do recommend getting the photos taken. Even if you think you might not use them for the wedding or for save the dates, you’ll always cherish beautiful photos of you and your fiance during this part of your relationship. Like others have said, a lot of photographers include an engagement shoot as part of the wedding package when you book with them, and it’s a great way to get to know your photographer and get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day.

We went all out for our photos and I don’t regret it at all. My fiance and I have been together three years now, engaged for almost a year before our photos were taken, but we have almost no photographs of us together. I became completely overwhelmed when we got our pictures back, because I’ve never seen myself looking so happy before. In all the time we’ve been together, I just don’t get the opportunities to see how our relationship has changed my life for the better, yet here it is in the photos.

Seriously, don’t skip the photos. You never know what kind of treasure it could turn out to be.

We decided to do the engagement photo session, mostly so we could get to know our photographer better. We used the pictures on our Save the Dates and on our wedding website.
