kiram : Not really, the legal brothels here are incredibly regulated.  I personally know sex workers and ex sex workers. Believe it or not there are actually women who fully choose sex work.  To paint them all as helpless victims is pretty rude and condescending.  There are tonnes of rules about protection, testing etc.  I would say it’s probably safer to be with a guy that’s been with a legal prostitute than a guy who’s had random one night stands.

Illegal brothels/street prostitution is a whole different category.  I would think it gross if I found out someeone I know was going to an unlicensed place or picking up a street prostitute.  Since it’s legal here, anyone doing it illegally is pretty much guaranteed to as you said, do it for survival or out of duress.

Is it legal in New York?  I kind of assumed it would be, if not I take back my original statement of not being a big deal.

ETA: I see it’s illegal pretty much America wide – that really suprises me.  I retract then.   I would find that gross.

LOL sorry, just laughing at the assumption that prostitution is legal in New York. NYC can be rowdy sometimes, but that doesn’t mean they get to make their own rules. I know America doesn’t have a great reputation these days, but I didn’t know we had THAT kind of reputation, lol. I think there’s one brothel in Las Vegas where prostitution is legal somehow, but other than that, it’s illegal on a federal level.

cypresstree85 :  because of the federalist history and structure of the US, many important laws are at the state, county, or municipal level rather than a national level. This includes laws about prostitution (and age of consent, and driving laws, and age limit on alcohol, etc.). One aspect of this system that confuses even Americans, let alone visitors from other countries, is that our sales tax varies not just state to state, but from town to town within a state. The federal government can make national laws on various bases, like the interstate commerce clause, and they can also financially incentivize states to make laws (like making 21 the legal age to drink, or 55 mph the national speed limit). But they’re actually pretty limited compared to most countries.

In any case, prostitution is illegal at the state level in every state except Nevada. Where interestingly it’s illegal at the county level in both Reno and Las Vegas. But brothels are legal in some rural Nevada counties.

There’s quite a scholarly debate about whether decriminalizing or legalizing sex work leads to better outcomes for sex workers (who exist regardless of legal status). It’s not a simple topic.

To the OP’s point, any reputable theraputic or relaxation massage business won’t have “happy endings”, and no I don’t think it’s normal for people to go to sketchy ones that do. And regardless of legal status, it’s absolutely not OK if they’re in relationships.
