So I already told you that my friend handed me a taped up banker’s box and put it in my trunk. I didn’t touch it and my SO retrieved the box from the trunk.
I knew we were getting engaged during our trip to Mexico and I was completely set on finding the PERFECT dress to become engaged in. I went to SOO many stores but I didn’t find the perfect dress. I bought a couple dresses, and I liked them, but I didn’t love them. The night before our trip I burst into tears because I didn’t find the right dress. Little did I know he already had taken care of everything!
We left for our trip on Monday morning. As soon as we got to the airport, SO gave me a card and a gift! The card has a photo of the movie we say for our first date and explained that this trip would be a story of our relationship. It came with wrapped ping pong balls (we met through mutual friends at a house party with beer pong).
I knew that we were getting engaged during the trip but suddenly I was extra extra excited!!! Once we got on the plane I got a second card and present! This card had sun flowers (he gave me sunflowers for our first date) and gummy bears (he gave me gummy bears along with a pink sapphire necklace when we became official).
We had a layover in Texas and SO’s sister and her husband took us out and we got some shopping done, ate food, and went ice skating. His sister is really his only family left and we don’t see her often so that was really nice. They dropped us off at the airport and handed us a large goody bag with travel accessories, snacks, and a photo album for our trip- SO’s sis is such a sweetheart. Once we got on our next plane, SO told me to look in the photo album. I didn’t at first and he asked me again to please look in the photo album. Turns out SO’s sister was in on the proposal plan, the photo album was gift #3 and the third card was inside! This card had a photo of us from Comic Con the day we dressed up. He went as Doctor Doom and I went as Squirrel Girl. The card talked about how I went to law school and our relationship was statistically doomed (90%+ of relationships don’t survive grad school).
We arrived in Cancun, Mexico and a taxi took us to our resort. It is the nicest place I have ever stayed! We were given cool towels, flowers, and champagne while we checked in. Our room was beautiful- it had an ocean view, overlooked a cute gazebo, and had a huge Jacuzzi tub. When we arrived, I got card #4 and a calling card so I could call my family from Mexico. That night we grabbed dinner and had a walk on the beach and around the resort.
The next day was Tuesday and SO and I played miniature golf after breakfast. After I won, we walked through the gardens and SO said that we should get back for lunch. SO had to disappear on his own for a bit to work out some arrangements for the activities he had planned. We had lunch and SO casually told me that I had a manicure appointment at the resort spa that afternoon. He apologized and said that some of our activities weren’t scheduled correctly so it had to be this afternoon.
Right after lunch I had to leave for my manicure at the spa. I figured he would propose later during the trip and this was the only manicure appointment they had open this week. I told him in an argument once (while I was a bratty waiting bee) that he had better not propose on a Tuesday night because Tuesday nights weren’t romantic. So I was pretty sure he wasn’t going to propose on a Tuesday night after that mess. When I got back to the room, I couldn’t find my SO.
It took me a couple minutes to realize that he had left a card for me on the bed. It was my 5th card and it was a photo of us from law school prom. It was laying on top of a Nordstrom dress bag next to a new pair of heels I bought for the trip. The card said to meet him at the gazebo in 15 minutes! (WHat?! OMG!) It looked like the proposal was happening tonight and I needed to get ready FAST!
I rushed around the room tripping over everything like a hot mess, doing my makeup and fixing my hair. I opened the dress bag and there was a pink lace strapless dress. It was the same shade of pink as the pink sapphire necklace he gave me the day we started dating officially and the pink sapphire earrings he bought me for our first Christmas together. It was perfect- way better than the dresses I had picked out, and I was really hoping it would fit! The dress fit like a glove (Thank goodness!) and I ran out the door!
I turned around the corner and I was surprised to see my SO dressed in black with a pink tie that matched my dress sitting in a horse drawn carriage in front of the gazebo! <3 He helped me into the carriage and gave me card #6. It had a photo from Gone With the Wind (one of my favorite movies/books) and said that he would always try to do romantic things for me. We had a horse and carriage ride along the beach and through the gardens of the resort. The weather was beautiful and everything was just gorgeous. I asked SO where we were going and he said I would see. He was quiet during our ride- I think he was a little nervous. Other resort guests cheered as we drove by and that was fun. I was getting more and more excited the whole time- it seemed like an eternity! In reality, our horse and carriage ride was 30 minutes.
The carriage stopped in a secluded area of the resort. SO helped me out of the carriage and handed me a 7th card with a sunset. The card talked about how much he loved and said that he had a question he needed to ask me. I looked up from reading the card and my SO was down on one knee with an open ring box. SO asked me to marry him and I was too excited to say anything. I nodded my head and tried to hold back the tears that were swelling up in my eyes. He placed the ring on my finger, we kissed, and we hugged. He had the wedding coordinator of the resort there and she took pictures of the whole thing. We got back into the carriage to take a few more pictures. SO knew I wanted pictures of that moment so I was so excited he arranged that for me. I scrap book and I love pictures! Then SO looked at his watch and said we needed to get to our next appointment.
I couldn’t imagine what could possibly happen next- he already proposed! It turns out he had hired a photographer to do a photo session of us on the beach and in the garden of the resort. The photographer took so many great pictures! We were only in our room a couple of minutes before we needed to leave for our dinner reservations.
We walked to the other side of the resort for dinner and me Fiance (!) surprised me again! He arranged for us to have a private dinner in a gazebo overlooking the ocean. We had a fabulous 5 course dinner with 2 private waiters. All the food was delicious (and my Fiance went to culinary school so I am accustomed to eating incredible food!). The funny part is that the original dinner my Fiance had planned didn’t work out (I guess they were full) so they gave us the honeymoon dinner- we even got a menu for our honeymoon dinner with our names on it! We topped off the night with his and hers bride and groom desserts! It wasn’t exactly what he planned, but it was amazing.
We had an amazing vacation- we saw the ruins at Chichen Itza, went on a catamaran ride, snorkled, and relaxed poolside! It was so nice to celebrate alone together before spilling the beans and telling all our family and friends.
I am so incredibly happy and all the terrible waiting days were completely worth it- I feel so lucky and I am so excited to share my life with my awesome FI! So to all the waiting bees out there, hang in there! Getting engaged will be everything you wanted (and more) even if it happens on a Tuesday!
We got engaged a couple weeks ago, so this post is really over-due, but I wanted to wait until I got the pictures back! Sorry if they are kinda big!! 🙂
