I actually worry about this every time I have to walk through a dark room. I don’t think it’s irrational at all (not sure if that helps haha). I usually try to have flip flops or slippers around before I get out of bed at night though. You aren’t alone 🙂

I don’t have that one, but once in a while I worry that a snake is going to come out of the toilet! Ever since I saw on tv a video of a snake coiled up in a toilet, the idea of that freaks me out. (I’m very, very scared of snakes!)

When I was young I had this weird fear in my head where the floor of my bedroom might be covered in bugs or snakes at any moment, so I used to practice getting from my bed to the hallway (apparently bugs would never go there?) without ever touching the ground. I would do “bug drills” in the middle of the night when I couldn’t sleep. I had to climb from my bed to the top of my dresser, over to my desk, then to another dresser, and from there I could open the door and jump out into the hallway.

Kids do such weird things.

I’m terrified of bedbugs. I might become a hermit because of them.

@pb and j: OMG, that is hysterical!!  Did your parents ever know about this? Wonder what they would have thought if they saw you do this in the middle of the night?!!

This is totally normal.  Especially if you see a bug, it may take awhile to get it out of your mind.  The other night I had Fiance take out the air conditioner because there were stink bugs everywhere in my bed room.  I couldn’t sleep because thats all I was thinking about even after vacumming them up.  I live in a wooded area so they are everywhere, along with many other bugs.  I even had 2 dead snakes outside the front of my house (closer to the road) but still it really freaked me out.  Now I think there’s snakes everywhere!

@Jenn23: nope, but they probably wouldn’t have been surprised if they caught me at it….this was fairly par for course for me as a kid, i was always doing weird things and acting out scenarios i dreamt up.

@mandb122: Yes, I’ve had those exact same fears at times. It may be a bit irrational, but hey, it could happen, and it’s that small chance of it happening that freaks me out. I’m also scared that one day I’ll wake up to a spider on the wall right next to my head.

Everything about insects freaks me out.  Uggh I hate them!  I’m always afraid of waking up to find one on me… it’s one of the reasons why I have to sleep under the covers, warm weather or not!

Its NOT irrational!  I have been in therapy for a year to get rid of my roach phobia!  Its  been a major disruptance in my previously independant life.  The past few months I have been able to go home alone to an empty apartment, but I still need to take klonopin.  I can’t spend the night alone in my apartment, which is a complete 180 for me, since I used to live alone.  When this first started, all I could talk about to anyone was roaches.  It was really really bad and I felt totally crazy.

I have an irrational phobia that involves birds.  The worst is when i dream that they are swarming around me and touching me ugghhh. Now i know i’m going to dream about them tonight.

Gaah. I have massive arachnophobia. I’ll scream and run away. This morning I came downstairs to open up the curtains and what do I see on the wall in the half light? The most MASSIVE spider! Freaked me out. Luckily Darling Husband doesn’t mind rehoming them – far away from our home!

Definitely NOT irrational!  This sort of happened to me!  (Not having one on my face thank goodness…I don’t think I could handle that!)

Now I know you are all thinking “What’s this crazy girl in Canada talking about?!  They don’t have roaches there!”  True, but I did a summer internship in Houston a few years ago, so I have definitely encountered roaches!  There was an almost dead one on the bathroom floor that I kicked when on the way to the toilet one morning…it was my very first roach encounter!  Was I traumatized?  Yes…but I have since seen more and even though I also had a run-in with a few roaches in a not-so-great downtown LA hotel room, I am better now, although they still make me shudder.  There is hope for you!
