    We hired one photographer, but the date of one of my husband’s groomsmen brought her camera, as did my husband’s aunt. I didn’t know they were bringing theirs but I am glad they did. Each of them caught different moments differently and we had a lot of great shots. I recommend two

    You should be clear that there’s a difference between an “assistant” and a “second shooter.” An assistant is someone who helps the photographer by holding the off-camera flash, setting up shots, wrangling relatives for formals, schlepping gear, etc. The assistant might take a few photos as well, but it’s not his/her main job. I would guess that most of the top wedding photographers mentioned here work with an assistant, otherwise they would be very limited in how they can light shots and how quickly they can move.

    @Groominator:  100%. I’ve never worked a wedding without an assistant and never would.
