Hello bees!!! My wedding has come and gone and it was wonderful! Now, two of my very best friends are planning their weddings so I am far from done with the hive! I need your expert opinions!
My bff is getting married in October so she is needing to pick out maid’s dresses soon. She is wanting long dresses, but the other bridesmaid is pretty petite. I think about 5′ or maybe shorter, so she is worried about her being swamped in a long dress. I am 5’10” so that wouldn’t be an issue with me, but she wants to find something that looks good on both of us. The petite maid is about 8 months pregnant (I think) so she isn’t really able to try on dresses to see what works. I had short dresses for my outdoor wedding, so I didn’t do a lot of research as far as length. I know a-lines are pretty flattering for most women, but I just know you guys will have lots of advice and ideas as far as silhouette and length. Ready? Go!

Just came back from a wedding in which I was a Bridesmaid or Best Man (I’m 5’2″ and the Maid/Matron of Honor was 5’10”). We both felt lovely and elegant in our dresses. The crazy thing is the Maid/Matron of Honor also had to get hers hemmed, long Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses must be for amazons. LOL.
ETA if you are going long, puffy skirts probably won’t be flattering on a petite girl.

My BMs were from 5′ to 5’11” and wore long dresses and no one was swamped!

I think it’s fine for a petite Bridesmaid or Best Man to wear a long dress. It’s all about creating good proportions. The best way to do that is to have a high waist line like an empire or natural waist.

My Maid/Matron of Honor is 4’10” I believe, and she hates long dresses on her. It makes her look like a stump. Plus, she’d rather find a dress she doesn’t need to alter. And she sees no way she could ever rewear it.
So she’s wearing a short dress and is happy.
Could you two wear similar dresses, but one long and the other short? Or else both in short. Tall and short gals both look good in short dresses!

I suggest going to a bridal shop and seeing how a long dress looks on the shorter girl. i use to work in a few bridal shops so i would see this a lot. It usually is all about how the dress is cut. do not go with a drop waist! it will cut the shorter girl in half and make her look even shorter. i suggest an empire waist. that will elongate her body. also heavy materials can sometimes make a person look shorter but that would ahve to test on her and depends what the bride whats for how formal shes going with. something like chiffon would make her look longer and flowy where something like taffeta or satin will weigh her down. the taller girl will look good in pretty much whatever but i wouldnt suggest shorter dresses because that will show off how much longer her legs are compared to the shorter girl who will just look stubby.
I had to wear a taffeta short very low cut dress for a friends wedding and believe me it wasnt good. the Maid/Matron of Honor was very tall and thin and looked great where i am about 3″ shorter, chubby and very big busted. then there was the brides sister who was a stick and the dress was just bagging off her. my point is dont pick a dress thats going to look great on one girl and horrible on the other cause trust me it will show in the pictures forever!

Being pregnant, she might feel more comfortable in a long dress. As long as the skirt isn’t poufy I think she will be fine

I have a similar problem! Most of my bridesmaids are fairly petite like myself (about 5’2), however, one of the girls is extremely tall at 6’4!!
I do know that I want the girls to all wear short dresses and I know that they’ll all look great, however, I am a little worried about how the pictures will come out.
I am going to talk to the photographer and see if we can come up with some different shots and angles that will compliment everyone’s height 🙂

I’m very petite and look just fine in long dresses! I’d be more concerned about the tall girl in a short dress, so I would go with long.

I struggle with this all the time. I am the bride at 6’0, My Maid/Matron of Honor is 5’5 and my Future Sister-In-Law is 5’3 and another bridesmaid is 5’4 so I have some pretty short girls compared to me. However I also have 2 girls who are 5;10. We went an empire waist dress in chiffon. It made the shorter girls look tall but it was also slimming for everyone. I can’t believe it but EVERYONE actually agreed on the dress. I would go long but use a really light fabric. The shorter girls loved that it could get hemmed up and still make them look taller.

I’m about 6 ft in heels which I always wear…other girls…5’4 in heels 😛 I’m gonna look like a saskquatch but oh well, just try to elongate them? lol

@dazydeadpetals: i wouldn’t be worried at all about having a petite girl in a Bridesmaid or Best Man dress standing next to a Bridesmaid or Best Man who is taller. I would be worried if they were doing short dress…then I can see the issue.

@dazydeadpetals: A long dress can look good on a short woman… especially if she is wearing heels, she will look taller than usual. Just make sure it is not a poofy dress. A long, simple sheath or column dress, without tons of material will look nice on a shorter woman. It can be flowy, just not poofy, or with large details (flowers, belts, bling) that overwhelm her.
Plus, a lot of short brides wear long wedding dresses, and still look great. A short dress can be tricky, because it has to hit the right spot at the hem or else she will appear to have “stubby” legs. Also, short dresses can sometimes give the “little girl” effect to a petite woman. As for sillouette, that depends more on body type than height. An empire waist would elongate her body, but if she is busty it will make her look wider and possibly pregnant (I gather she will not still be pregnant at the wedding?).
I’m 4’11”, and would prefer to wear a long dress, or an above-knee fitted sheath.
