So, Darling Husband and I just got married this past Saturday. My officiant, explained everything to me, but in the madness of the day, I forget what he said…lol.
I have in my possession a “Record of solemnization of Marriage”. And I have my form to fill out for my marriage certificate. Now, the form says that I have to wait 12 weeks to file for my certificate. Did anyone do it before hand?
I plan on assuming my partner’s name. When doing this, is the record of marriage enough? Or do I need to wait 12 weeks to mail out my certificate form and then wait until that arrives before changing my name? Or can I go to a service ontario center and my bank, etc, and start changing it now with just the record of marriage?
Any help would be appreciated.

I looked through the PDF for applying and I couln’t find any reference to a 12-week waiting period. Looks like you can apply online or at a Service Canada location for faster service.

I just got married in Ontario on the 15th. My officiant told me to wait 4-5 weeks, then apply for the marriage certificate online. The reason for the wait is because the marriage has to be registered first before they can issue you a marriage certificate. After the wedding, the officiant mails in a bunch of info about the wedding to get it registered and it takes the government usually 4-5 weeks to do so in the summer time. You can go online to service ontario and try applying. It will tell you if it is too early or not. With the record of solemnization of marriage, you can go to a service Canada outlet and change your last name on your SIN card, and also at work. You can also use that paper to change your name at most other places like your bank. The only places I couldn’t change my last name were for my drivers license, health card, and car ownership. But also because I haven’t changed my drivers license, I also haven’t changed my car insurance and because I haven’t changed my health card, I haven’t changed my name at the doctors or pharmacy or chiropractor yet. Hope that helps you! And congratulations!

@babeandbabe: our officiant told us that when we apply for the certificate if we include a copy of the record of solemnization of marriage with the request it can help them get the certificate faster. Whether this is true I have yet to determine as we 38 days away from our wedding. I can say that the clerk told us to wait a few weeks to mail in the paperwork for the certificate as they can be behind in registering everything and then it’s an even longer wait.
