At the last sit-down open-bar reception I attended, the open bar closed during dinner and wine was served.  Maybe it also saves money for you…?

I don’t think its uncommon – our venue does the same thing.  During a sit-down dinner, the open bar closes during dinner and wine (red and white) is poured at the tables.  The bar then re-opens after dinner during the dancing part of the reception.

Do you save money if they do that?

Are you paying by the hour or on consumption?  If you are paying by the hour, thats understandable to close during dinner.  If you are paying on consumption I would keep it open.  Not everyone drinks wine (if you are serving that during dinner) so they might want to get another drink or even a soda from the bar.

If hosting on consumption, I would only close it when you do your Grand Entrance & First Dance (if you are doing your dance before eating).

Why dont you ask if they can be open and hosted for sodas and waters during the dinner (probably a small additional fee) and have the liquor hosted for the 4.5 hours and not including dinner.  I do have to admit Id be a little upset if I wanted a drink and the bar was closed and then it was open again an hour later.

I would think most people would know that open bars are usually closed during dinners {wedding, charity events, etc.}. I always get a drink before I sit down to dinner. Am I the only one? I’ve never actually seen it done another way. Maybe it’s a local thing.

The coordinator at our Club (The reception venue) told us that they always closed the bar during dinner in order to get people to go sit down for dinner (we had our wedding on three different floors of the Club).  We planned to do this and serve wine at dinner.  We were a bit worried about it, but decided to take her advice.

When the day of came, Darling Husband and I sat at the head table and kept watching all of our beer drinking friends getting up to get a drink – so we just told them to open one of the bars during dinner.  I think for our crowd it was the right choice.

As far as price, it really didn’t make a difference to us because we knew our bar bill was going to be astronomical (it was consumption based).

Just wanted to pass along my experience on the issue.

Good luck and happy planning!

That is how they run the Open Bar at my venue and then serve wine during the dinner. At first, we didn’t like the idea and we may add another an hour of bar service during the meal since we’ve been to weddings where it was closed and we heard people complain. It depends on our budget.

I don’t think its unusual though, no worries.

I think MrsK2Be is exactly right- my venue coordinator said the same thing- otherwise people get up during the reception dinner/speeches/etc. Makes sense.
