Hi guys, first time ring buyer here and picking out EC stone…Girlfriend cares nothing about quality and is all about the size. But i don’t think she wants to be looking at a big ole black carbon in the middle. She wears a size 8, and I’m on a budget. Found this 1.60CT from a reputable seller and he swears it will be eye clean and white. It is IGI certified SI1 K color. Here is the picture they sent me and the setting its going in. And then I found a 1.23 F color SI 1 with EGL grading that looks super clean. Whats your guys thoughts?
8.17 x 5.82
7.77 x 5.06

I’m certainly not a diamond expert, but I would say that the larger stone is definitely not eye clean. I would go for the second slightly smaller stone. Do you have a close up of that one?

I prefer the 1.23.
The first stone is not eye clean at all.

The first one is a shocker! The second is beautiful and with the setting there is good finger coverage so she should be happy with the end product (how could you not be with that beauty!)

The second one does look cleaner, but it is hard to tell because it isn’t a close up. If you want to compare the differences in size and see them on a finger, diambd.com is a good website.

go with the second stone for sure.

I would definitely go for the second stone. Emerald cuts show a lot more than other cuts, so I don’t think I’d go for the first one.

I wouldnt rule out the 1st one quite yet.. anyways they can show a real life perspective like the second stone?

Go for the second stone. The first one will not be eye clean and a K color will be warm in a step cut diamond. Most of the time they say to stay at vs2 and above for step cuts, but an si1 could be ok too as long as there’s no dark inclusions. It will give good finger coverage with the halo setting you’ve picked out.

I would stay away from a K Color in an EC. Beautiful setting, will give good finger coverage. I’m a 7.5 and going through same struggle.

nokaoi620: THE SECOND ONE. I will echo what everyone else has said. That second one is so breathtaking and gorgeous and IMO looks very large. Particularlly if you put that in a halo- it’s gonna be big. Congrats on the big step. You have a lucky lady!

nokaoi620: I can’t say I know a lot about ECs but I think ‘yuck’ to the first one but I did go all ‘ooooh’ over the second one. I like the look of that a lot. Have you posted for advice on the pricescope forum on the ‘rocky talk’ section?

The first one is not eye clean at all.
We recently bought an EC engagement ring and the jeweller advised not to go lower than F color and VS1. Even with a VS1, we had to be picky with the stone and make sure any inclusions are white.
Because of the way the diamond is cut, any inclusions will easily show and color will show too.
We ended up getting a 1.02 ct F FL. It’s currently being made and should be completed next week.

I would definitely go with the second one!

I agree with the previous posters. Having just gone through the engagement ring buying process, I feel the struggle. I think the second stone is awesome. The size difference between the two won’t be extremely obvious because of the setting you chose. I know that you said size is the most important factor for your girl, but the quality of an emerald cut is extremely important. The inclusions on stone number one are pretty glaring. Regardless of the stone, that setting is beautiful and you have great taste!
