No, I would think they are more likely to be available or able to rearrange their evening for a weeknight rather than a weekend.

It depends on how late in the evening it is and how far I have to travel.  I could make a 7PM wedding on a Thursday night!  6:30 would be rushing it… and 6 would be me leaving right after work to attend.

@Quicksand:  I would never be able to make a Thursday wedding without taking time off of work, and unless it was a close family member of best friend, I likely wouldn’t.

I’m having my wedding on a Thursday afternoon/evening, but it’s a destination wedding for all of the family coming, and the other guests who live there are grad students with flexible schedules, so it’s a non-issue.

As a guest, it would depend a bit on the time I normally left work – if your guests are supposed to be at the wedding at 5pm, I’d imagine most people would have to leave work at least a little early (to get dressed, drive there, etc). For some people, that’s not a big deal, but others would probably find it difficult.

I just want to note that I am basing my judgement on the behavior of those in the community that I live.  Not all people are like this…

I think that it will just depend on how far your guests have to travel then.  I would be able to attend if I didnt have to travel very far.  Unfortunately, you might see more at the reception than wedding because they werent able to make it to the wedding.

Yes. If you absolutely must do a weekday wedding, go for Friday.

@sarahbabs:  This. Having to leave work early and then be out late knowing I had to work in the morning …I’d probably skip it unless it was a super close friend or family member that I was willing to take the time off for.

If it was a local wedding and I had to be there at 5 like you mentioned, I would have to take of at least half a day (no hour-by-hour vacation time here) in order to be there on time.  If it was out of town, then I’m looking at at least a day of vacation time– half a day there and half a day to get back.

If it must be Thursday, then push it back to 6 or 6:30, but really if it’s a weekday the Friday would be better and would allow guests to travel home without burning too much vacation.  Unless it is a federal holiday on Friday, but then there are other issues with guests making holiday plans.

To be frank, unless it was a family member, I would probably decline.  Even in the same town, attending on a Thursday is iffy.  A ceremony and reception is a long time commitment for a guest on a weeknight.

@Quicksand:  Not necessarily. I would prefer a Thursday evening to a Sun, Mon, Tues, or Wed wedding 😀

Since I do have to work the next day I would probably duck out at a reasonable time (I tend to go to bed pretty early since we’re up at 6), but I would leave later than if it were on another weeknight. Many people will take Friday off so that’s ok too.
