I voted against balloon releases. The balloons will float to who knows where, fall and then possibly get eaten by an animal and it could kill them. Not to mention it’s littering.

If you’d like to do something to remember those who aren’t with you, could you maybe light some candles/have candles for guests to light? Or do a reading or something?

@futuremrste:  Exactly. Especially if you’re near any large bodies of water, balloons can be a huge environmental issue. I like the idea of lighting candles, or perhaps a donation to charity in their honour, if there’s a particular illness or cause related to any people you want to commemorate on the day?

@Carolinejane:  Even with biodegradable balloons, there will still be pieces that could be eaten before they have a chance to biodegrade. I still recommend you find something else to do to commemorate those you have lost.

@Carolinejane:  A lot of people don’t think of the environmental impact of their actions. Either they just don’t care or it just doesn’t occur to them that releasing balloons up in the air won’t keep them there, they’ll eventually come down to earth. I had never thought of this until Fiance told me about it when we saw a balloon floating around one day while out for a walk.

What about releasing a dove that’s trained to come back or something like that?

I can tell you that my furbabies would eat pieces of balloon before they decomposed. I’ve seen them eat leaves, so I know they get to stuff pretty fast. Why not write letters, messages, whatever and justburn those directly? Same idea, but it’s just smoke being released into the air (or going up to heaven, if you’re religious, pick your metaphor).

How about an outdoor fire bowl where you could put notes and burn them?
