@CAWiley:  It’s only too long if it’s too long for you. What other people think is completely irrelevant.

Some might say my engagement, at 4.5 months, was too short.

We’re getting married in October and at that time we will have been engaged for 2.5 years. We started dating at 15 years old and this year we will be celebrating our 12-year dating anniversary! I got many of those weird looks (even a couple of laughs) too when I told people we weren’t getting married until 2013. Honestly its none of anybody’s business and I think its just plain rude for people to react that way. By pushing our wedding back we were able to purchase a beautiful house and take a couple of month-long trips to Europe. We’ve lived together for 7 years and share all the responsibilites/bills so at this point our world is not going to drastically change just by getting married. If you’re sure you found the right person what difference does it make whether you get married now or in 5 years? (Unless you’re waiting to move in together, consummate your marriage, etc.) You’ll be together in the end either way.

I think a long engagement is much better than a whirlwind romance/marriage in a couple of months. Most of the people I know who did that are now divorced or on their way to getting one (not that it doesn’t work for some people..).
