I am totally smitten with this particular setting on Gemvara.com. And I am seriously considering ordering it. Trouble is, I can’t decide which of three centers I would like. So what do you guys think? If you ordered this ring (and I know it’s likely not to everyone’s taste), which stone would you prefer? Since it’s a wider setting with a fairly good-sized stone, I was planning to size it for my index finger. Not sure if that would make a difference in stone selection or not. Also, the metal will be silver.
London Blue Topaz: (I love this stone, but it is probably my third choice right now because I recently got a ring that features it)
Amethyst: (This is DH’s birthstone)

I love London blue topaz, but maybe the amethyst might be better since you already have a topaz ring.

I know you recently got a ring w/ london blue topaz… but that blue really suits the style of this ring!

London blue topaz! Amethyst is not as durable my jeweler specializes in semi precious gems and did not recommend it for a ring you plan to wear often. I’m not a fan of black onyx because it’s doesn’t sparkle much, and you cannot see through it at all, it’s opaque. London blue topaz has amazing color and is durable. I know you said you already have a ring with this stone so I understand why your not leaning towards it. Have you considered any other gemstones? Like Tanzanite or tourmaline? I love pink tourmaline! But if I were to chose one of theses rings and I already owned a London blue then I would probably chose the onyx because it’s unique and durable enough for daily wear.

tksjewelry: majorairhead: mrssloan2013: Thank you all for your input, advice, and thoughts. I appreciate it very much. You have all helped me to think through things in a more organized and logical way. This can be hard when I am swayed by pretty shiny things!
These three were my favorite choices out of the stones that fit within my budget for this ring. I have been eyeing this setting for months now — ha, ha!
I hadn’t thought about amethyst being too soft or not durable enough for every day wear. That is definitely a factor in my decision. Much as I think amethyst is a beautiful stone, the center for this ring is a pretty good size. Plus it has a lot of surface area. So something more durable might be a better choice.
And even though I like the black onyx a lot, I think I would like it more in a gold setting than in the silver. I looked at it in rose gold, and it was so, so beautiful! Right now, though, any metal other than silver is out of my budget. Plus, realistically, I will be more likely to wear the ring more often if it’s set in a white-toned metal. That’s just what I prefer against my skin tone. I’m also not crazy about the lack of sparkle with onyx. But I do think it’s striking in this particular stone shape and size and in this setting. The London Blue looks the best in silver, though, I think.
Honestly, London Blue would have been my first and only choice if I hadn’t just gotten another ring with it as the center stone. I love it, and blue is my favorite color. So I tend to wear lots of it, or things that coordinate with it. Looking at the three choices, I have to say that London Blue probably is my favorite, too. Maybe I should just go with that and not worry about trying to diversify with a different type of stone.
Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll, too!

Have you considered the garnet? I think it looks striking in that siver setting.

Where’s pengoala on this one? Every other thread has been closed this morning. This one will probably be closed in a minute too.

I have an amethyst right hand ring (it’s my son’s and my birthstone). I don’t wear it everyday, but I wear it often. I’ve had it 7 years? And it is fine. So I would choose amethyst!

majorairhead: I thought about garnet. It is really pretty against the silver. And I think it looks good with the detailing on the setting. But I’ve never been much of a “red” person, which makes me afraid I wouldn’t wear it as much if I picked garnet.
alabamagirl: Oh! That’s good to know. Thanks for sharing your experience. Amethyst is my DH’s birthstone, too, which made it a good contender as the center stone. Sadly, my birthstone is Diamond and DD’s is Sapphire — both of which are super out of my price range for a fun RHR. Ha,ha!

UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!
OK, I just put in my order. And I decided on … *drumroll* (ha, ha)
London Blue Topaz!!
I just could not deny my love for the gorgeous blue of this stone. Plus I think it looks so, so pretty against the silver. I’m really excited to see it in an emerald cut and in this setting, too!
Thank you again, everyone who left comments in this thread and everyone who voted in the poll! I appreciate all of your help. And it was fun to share the shopping experience with you guys.
