Darling Husband and I just started TTC this month and since my cycles are still regulating from getting off BC 2 months ago and I wake up at all different time, I’m using OPK’s to help predict ovulation. But I have some questions and some problems with the ick factor, lol. I’m wondering if everyone has the same problems, or if there are any solutions I haven’t thought of.
Apologies in advance for the Too Much Information….
IDK about anyone else, but apparently I’m pee-in-a-cup disabled. Somehow it’s never very…neat…if you know what I mean. I always end up having some type of spillage or splashing :S. And then instructions say to put the stick on a clean, non-absorbent surface. So I’ve been laying them on the bathroom counter, and then trying to clean it after, which is kinda gross. I can’t imagine what Darling Husband would say if he knew what I was doing, hahah. And I see people post pictures of their fade in with all the sticks together, but I have no idea how this is accomplished – do you keep the peed on sticks somewhere? And is there any point, since the tests say they’re not valid after 5 minutes?
I’ve tried the pee directly on kind, and still end up making a mess :S. Are there any tricks I’m missing here?
Also, a technical question – the instructions say to use FMU, but everything I’ve read says to LH surges happen in the afternoon. I’m not sure which is better, so I’ve started POAS twice a day, to make sure I don’t miss it.

POAS more than one a day when you know you are getting close is smart.
As far as the ick factor is concerned, you’re going to have to get over it. If you think you are PIAC a lot now… just wait until you are KU. :o) Seriously, though… you will get better at it – I promise! I bought a big box of Dixie cups and used those – MUCH easier and cleaner than the shallow plastic cup that a lot of OPKs come with. If you are grossed out by putting your OPK on the counter, you can put it on a piece of TP. I know it says nothing absorbant, but you will be FINE, I promise. :o) Either that or keep a container of Clorox wipes in your bathroom and wipe down the sink after, but U is pretty sterile so I don’t think you need to worry so much (this coming from a total clean freak).

@Future MrsB: Not sure how your OPKs come, but mine are in individual white sealed sleeves, so I just sit my test on top of that on the counter.
You will get better at peeing in the cup, just takes practise to line it up 🙂 you’ll be a natural in no time (although I do sometimes get a little splashed…). I sit my cup on the toilet seat between my legs, so if it drips at all its easy to wipe up with toilet paper 🙂
I just test in the afternoon when I get home from work – I’ve caught my positive 4 out of 4 times that way. The last two months I’ve checked it the next morning and it was still positive, so I think that I could do either afternoon or FMU. Everyone seems to have different experiences with OPKs though…
Not sure about collecting the sticks – i’ve wondered the same thing about keeping them for days and their validity…
Oh there is no such thing as Too Much Information around here, is there!!!

Thanks you guys, I seriously thought I was doing something wrong since I was having such issues! I think I’m getting close, the test line is definitely darker than yesterday’s and looks fairly close to the control line. I bought some digitals too today, so I can confirm.

@Future MrsB: Hehe this made me giggle 🙂 I have purchased a multipack of medium sized plastic picnic cups which I keep in the bathroom. Like other posters, when I have dipped the stick in this, I place it on the small plastic sleeve it came in on the side of the sink, or if its a digi just on the side of the sink (making sure it’s dry first).
I haven’t kept any for very long tho, but I guess if the results show within the alloted time & then stays you can keep them as a reminder. I would guess people maybe stick them to a piece of paper to line them up?

@Mrsluckywife: I’m glad I can provide some entertainment, lol.
My cheapie/non-digital ones did not come with individual plastic sleeves. They were all together in this plastic container that you have to pop the top off of. I’ve been trying to wipe down the counter and hope my Darling Husband doesn’t realize I’ve been getting pee on it, lol.
And now I’ve got a collection of a couple of them on the counter on some toilet paper. I’ve noticed that the colors do change over time, but the differences stay the same. So the test line hasn’t gotten darker than the control line, it’s still the same amount lighter, but they’re both darker.

@Future MrsB: =) he he. Ah I see, laying them on the counter is fine! As long as it’s dry. I’m sure a little pee won’t harm anyone 😉
Oh that’s interesting about the colour change. I didn’t know about that.
