There is evidence that saliva is bad for sperm health.  However, unless you are having difficulty conceiving, it’s probably not a huge concern.  If you’re having difficulty, you can try cutting out oral sex just during your peak days.

sweetis:  I’ve heard the same thing. I didn’t know saliva had such a large impact on not getting pregnant… Except that was untrue for us. Without trying too be graphic, DH and I both gave and received and we still conceived when oral was present. I guess if the saliva is not used a lot (like spitting in the hand and using it as a lube), it should be fine.

I’ve heard that about saliva. I didn’t want to take my chances, so nothing in the FW for us!

sweetis:  The following seems to be the abstract of the study that explored the effect of saliva on sperm motility. The link is below the abstract, and you can try to find it in archived copies of Fertility and Sterility if you have access and want to read more about the methods of the study.

“Infertile couples frequently experience sexual dysfunction during their infertility investigations, including inadequate vaginal lubrication. In a attempt to look for a lubricant that would not impair sperm motility and activity, saliva was added to normal semen from healthy male donors. Saliva induced a “shaking movement” in 12% of the total sperm population incubated with high concentrations of saliva. This phenomenon did not occur with low concentrations of saliva, but sperm motility and progression significantly decreased. The results indicate that saliva has a deleterious effect on sperm motility and activity and should not be encouraged as a vaginal lubricant for the infertile couple.”

Saliva seems to have some spermicidal activity, but it certainly doesn’t kill sperm and, even if you cut out oral sex while TTCing, it doesn’t mean that you need to cut out oral sex completely. You can cut it out right before and during ovulation and enjoy it on the other days of the month.

sweetis:  For the first month of TTC, we continued to have oral sex regularly even when I was ovulating and I didn’t get pregnant. The second month, we didn’t do it when I was ovulating and I did get pregnant. Don’t know if that was why or not, but I don’t think it hurts to cut it out during the fertile window!

We have been there and our suggestion is that you continue to do it you your way. It works a treat; we know from experience!

Wow this is depressing since we did this in the fertile window this week. It was days before ovulation so would that still effect it ?

sweetis:  we avoid during FW due to the negative affect it can have on sPerm. It was hard at first bc DH is accustomed to receiving almost every time we BD but we have gotten used to it and it is now a special treat for our non fertile time.

Oh no, this is bread and butter for us. I hope it doesn’t have too big of an impact! 🙁

sweetis:  DH and I conceived and I always give him a bj to get him lubricated. Didn’t affect us! I didn’t receive the time I know we conceived though. Actually I didn’t know about the possible affects of saliva until after I got pregnant.

sweetis: Unless your guy has an issue with his sperm count, I wouldn’t quit. We certainly are keeping oral in our repetoir.
