I was referred to a cake lady by a girl I work with.. She makes cakes out of her home, sort of just for fun. The girl I work w/ said the cake she made was really good and everyone liked it butttt when I started talking to this cake lady, she said she doesn’t do tastings.
This scares me.
I’m going to talk to the girl I work w/ again.. Do you think it’s too risky?

Hmmm…personally I wouldn’t ever get a cake without a tasting, but I am super picky about cake.

Um, in a word, yes. I wouldn’t ever trust someone to do my cake without tasting it first! That’s terrifying!

But the cake is really cheap! Less than a grocery store!!!
🙁 I really don’t want to spend $700 on a dessert. lol

If it’s not something that you’re worried about or that you care too much about, then go for it. Dessert is just a huge deal to me, which is why I wouldn’t do it. But if you trust your friend then go for it! I agree on not being able to spend so much money on a cake – my sister will be making ours!

We did this for my sister’s wedding. It worked out fine! Will you be terribly broken hearted if your cake ends up less than perfect? If so, move on. If not, give her a shot!

I guess I just have no idea how to even start looking for a cake haha. I’ll do more research I suppose!

I think it totally depends on how picky you are. Are you going to be terribly upset if your butter creme frosting isn’t just right? If you are getting a steal of a deal, then I think the tasting might be something worth giving up. If you expect the perfect cake then you have to pay the higher price.

I agree that it depends how picky you are and how much you care about the cake. If it’s not that big of a deal to you, it might be worth it to cross it off the list. I didn’t taste our cake first, but it was made by a family friend.

We had a similar situation, our lady makes cake out of her house. And she uses *gasp* boxed mixes! You know what? I didn’t taste it before hand, didn’t give her too much direction, and no one cared! We had a good old fashioned yellow cake with chocolate icing and it tasted just like everyone remembers from their childhood! If cake’s not high on your priority list, don’t stress about a tasting! 🙂

I would do it. In fact, I think we may actually do this. I found a woman who is local to our venue and bakes out of her home. She offered to do a tasting then my aunt suggested a good friend of hers who used to do wedding cakes (recently only does them for friends). Basically, we want a very simple design and I trust my Aunt’s recommendation so we may just go with her sight and taste unseen. Yes, Iäve had amazing cake but wedding cake never impresses me so I feel like it can’t be bad.
