My boyfriend and I have been hunting about for an engagement ring. After finding moissanites, I totally fell in love with them. I also found the perfect band here.
I was hoping to order a 2.2 carat equivalent forever brilliant oval moissy from mossaniteco. I think the enhancing is pretty important and I’ve read that Amora won’t be doing ovals again in future.
We’ve asked UK jewellers if they can copy MDC’s band but the price they quoted us was far too much, so it makes sense just to buy it directly.
My question is – does anyone have any expierence of ordering moissys or bands from the States to the UK? MDC Diamonds New York, the people who sell the band, say we have to pay in £ and pay VAT but then reading about import tax says we’ll have to pay VAT and import tax in the UK. I’m hoping MDC would make it pretty clear on the invoice we’ve already paid VAT.
I think moissanites don’t attract import duty, so I’m hoping that will be okay.
I think I just need reassurance really, will it all be okay??
EDIT: Sorry, I should have probably mentioned it’s really hard to find moissanites in the UK. There’s maybe about 10 retailers here and none sell enhanced stones.

All help greatly appreciated. 🙂

Mine wasn’t Mossy, but it was from the states, they added VAT plus any other tax needed once we got to checkout, so it was all included, mine was from Blue Nile and we got the band and diamond as a whole…. not sure if that helps or not

Mine wasn’t from that site, but I did get it sent from America. We weren’t charged any import tax on it when it arrived.
I think just go for it – my only advice would be to make sure you absolutely have the sizing right when you order. My fiance was sent about 7 rings, one after the other, before we got one that was the right size. It was a total pain, and that was just sending them to and from a seller in the UK. I can’t imagine the stress of having to send back and forth between the US and the UK!

We Ordered a loose moissy stone from moissanite co and didn’t incur any import duty or tax. I think on their website they mention that they label it as costume jewellery in order to avoid the tax- don’t know how this affects insurance if it got lost. We where going to order a band from James Allen but that would have meant paying crazy tax so it worked out cheaper for us to get one made here.
ps we got a forever brilliant moissy and its stunning and seriously white!

Moissyco is the way forward- they mark parcels $100 so I got a necklace from them as a ‘tester’ purchase and I did get charged tax/VAT on it but only on the marked $100 amount.
At most with Fed Ex fee it was less than £20, so you’ll be fine- it still works out way cheaper than gettting anythinng in the UK. (London Bee)
Not sure about MDC though. Have you looked at the moco bands? or you can get real diamonds by upgrading the Ashadiamonds ones (same company)

Thanks for your replies, ladies.
After speaking to MDC Diamonds a few times, my boyfriend has decided to take the plunge and place an order. MDC have been super helpful by sending us lots of photos and are sourcing a forever brilliant moissy that they will fit for us. The “live chat” function on their website is really useful, especially considering the time difference.
MDC are charging us VAT and I guess we’ll just have to wait and see in relation to import tax. Given what you guys have said, I’m not overly concerned about it.
I’m so excited! I can’t wait for my ring to get here! Even though my boyfriend will squirrel it away as soon as it does. 😛

I would say maybe ask as a favour to do what Moco does, they mark $100 ‘for security reasons’ and the purchase as costume jewellery. You may find it gets through Customs on the VAT front that way, just make sure they certainly do not mark the full price and fine jewellery… 20% of a grand is quite a bit… for example 😉
