- Wedding: August 2012
My husband and I went to Canada to get married (we’re from Utah). We just wanted mountains and Canada has a LOT of mountains! We drove there from Utah for an 11 day/10 night road trip.
This is just information for someone out there who may be looking into a similar idea. I know it’s not everyone’s style, but it may help someone out there! I’m comparing my pretrip guestimation with the actual costs. Plus I’m a total Excel nerd so I do this stuff for FUN actually.
Overall I forecasted too low about $618, but that is mainly because we only planned 3 actual nights, and the other 7 nights were by the seat of our pants.
Lodging: We camped for 4 nights. We hotelled for 3 nights. We splurged on a fancy lodge for 3 nights (night before, night of, and night after wedding). No worries, I had a shower every night. Most campgrounds in Canada (it appears) come with nice hot showers/real bathrooms.
Breakfasts: We ate out a few times, cooked for ourselves a few times, and had three breakfasts at the fancy lodge
Lunch: We were hiking every day during lunchtime so we had lunch on us – we brought from home tuna pouches, tortillas, dried fruit, trail mix, etc
Dinner: We ate out for every dinner usually pretty nice dinners. One night we got pizza delivered to the hotel because we were just plain old tired.
We hiked every day of the vacation (except for the two 14 hour driving days at the start and end of the trip). It just happened that way. Canada has so much beauty and we had to see as many mountain ranges as we could! So I guess you can say the shopping/souvenier budget was zero.
Of course if you’re looking for a roadtrip honeymoon cost, just subtract the details, ceremony, photographer, attire pretty much for the total to get an idea.
Here was my original forecasted spending for the trip – TOTAL $6401.77
And here is what it really ended up costing us – $7020.28
We got an 11 day roadtrip and a wedding (with photos and all attire, etc) for $7020. We had only 2 guests/witnesses.
I guessed a little low for food ($520 vs. $801)
Not too off on gas guestimation (only $32 off!)
I thought we’d camp a couple more nights than we did, but we hotelled it instead (comes to an average of $168/night between all the lodging).
Extras: Originally it was my hair appt and park passes, but I cancelled the hair appt, and we bought some champagne, beer, other things instead, and the park passes – so came out a little over
Details: I guessed the value of the elopement details was a little high, so that means the room was more than I thought. But still good for all the details (champagne, cake, bouquet, boutonneire, wedding gift (engraved toasting flutes), 3 course wedding dinner, officiant arranging, breakfasts).
(Link to the wedding day photos if you are curious what this type of wedding looks like!)
We had set aside about $12k for a Jackson Hole wedding that was later cancelled (sad story), and with the money we saved we bought Invisalign braces (teeth) for ourselves. We’re going to have great teeth! In 9-13 months…. LOL
OK, I’ve geeked out on your enough for today!
