Just as an FYI – we felt very safe in Barbados!
Just as an FYI – we felt very safe in Barbados!
Thank you all for your suggestions. My travel agent also mentioned Hawaii, and I had written it off because I thought it would be out of our budget. We will see what she comes up with!
In in regards to cruises, I did do a cruise with my mom this past year and while we had a good time, I want to be able to park my rear in the sand and not move for a week.
Hawaii is amazing if you end up changing plans. My destination wedding was on Maui and my brother, who used to write for a Caribbean travel magazine and has been everywhere there, said Maui is now his favorite place. D.H. and I also went to Kauai and that was a bit less touristy and more rural than Maui, which we loved.
Darling Husband and I also went to Bermuda a couple years ago, we took a cruise but there are also resorts there. It was beautiful, nice pink sand beaches, and great snorkeling. It’s not as grand as Hawaii but it’s safe like Hawaii, you can go explore the island without worry. Our motivations for choosing Hawaii and Bermuda were that they were both Zika-free, but once there we commented on how safe we felt.
From what I’ve heard, many of the people who died in the DR lately (at the Hard Rock and Bahia) drank from the minibar which is leading people to suspect that the minibars have poisoned or bootleg liquor. Something similar occured in Mexico a while back.
I don’t know if someone has mentioned this but I just saw this in an MSN article.
“A Pennsylvania woman, 41-year-old Miranda Schaup-Werner, died last month after reportedly drinking from her hotel room minibar at the Bahia Principe Hotel in La Romana, CNN reported.”
It could very well be over blown but I know I wouldn’t be able to relax and enjoy myself i’d be absolutely paronoid to eat or drink anything.
mel2 : Wow, small world. Darling Husband and I honeymooned at Ocean Coral @ Turquesa as well. We enjoyed it, very nice place but I don’t know if we would go back. We didn’t have a bad experience, but it didn’t overly wow us. I would recommend it for a first time trip to Mexico at an all-inclusive though!
ETA: I have never felt un-safe in Mexico. In fact, Darling Husband and I went a few weeks after there was news reports in Cancun about some killings and pretty sure we traveled when there was one of the travel advisories out for the area… felt fine, we just didn’t leave the resort, didn’t plan to either. Our travel agent said the chances of us dying downtown in our large city in our state from a shooting was more likely than something happening to us at an all-inclusive in Mexico.
OP, I know it wasn’t on your original list but perhaps look into Puerto Vallarta, Cabo, Costa Rica.. those locations that aren’t *as* popular as Cancun, Rivera Maya, Playa del Carmen.
I would hope by November they will have all of this figured out, but I completely understand you wanting to change your plans.
I’d recommend the USVIs or BVIs, but I don’t think there are many all inclusive options.
kmbumbee190618 : thanks for the insights! We wanted to keep costs down and weren’t overly concerned with 5*… just wanted clean, safe, tropical beaches and all inclusive lol. SECond marriage with a kids and mortgage so we can only indulge ourselves so much, still had to budget a kids trip separate from This one 🙂
I wouldn’t go to DR right now and Jamaica isn’t much better in many areas. And although they should be understanding, I would definitely be willing to lose the deposit because of it. If you want to go Caribbean, I would go to Aruba or VI.
dgirl715 : I completely second Grand Cayman and Exuma! I’ve been to both many times and have always felt completely safe. And we’ve walked, biked, and boated everywhere around those islands and never, ever, had an issue or even felt for one moment that something was amiss. Plus they both have some of THE most beautiful clear, warm aqua water in the world. Amazing places.
If you want all-inclusive, go to Sandals Exuma.
Eep, yeah the fear of poisoned minibars is pretty creepy.
Hawaii is amazing but much easier if you’re coming from the West coast. If you’re closer to the east coast, what about Bermuda?
Grand Cayman is unbelievably beautiful and luxurious and it feels very safe!! I would go there in a heartbeat. Check it out.
We’re going to Riviera Maya, Mexico for our honeymoon, but we’ve also been to Jamaica and loved it! We stayed at Sandals Ochi, it was very clean and the staff were super friendly. We never felt unsafe.
FH has been to the DR and said it was underwhelming compared to Jamaica.
Turks and Caicos beachouse!!! Its amazing there!
if safety is a concern, i wouldn’t go to jamaica either.
i highly recommend costa rica.
