I think you did the right thing by reaching out to him and letting him know you are understanding he is going through a tough time. Still though, I’m sure you have a contract and can go about it that way if needed. Obviously no one wants it to come to that. He still has the only copies of your photos. Maybe you can ask for the raw files so that at least you have SOMETHING? And then he can edit them when he is feeling better? Maybe his issue is feeling overwhelmed with the editing. People DO get depressed before the holidays. It’s just a fact. Can the friend who introduced you go WITH you to the guy’s house? Maybe when he sees your concern in person he will understand these are IRRIPLACEABLE.

See if you can get the copies that he hasnt post produced yet. See if you can get permission for another photographer to do the post work.. If hes not up for it because of health then as a professional he needs to outsource the work to deliver. We all need help sometimes..

All the RAWs can be put on DVD or a thumb drive. Get the RAWs not jpegs or tiffs.. All he has to do is copy the originals over and hand them off with a release to do post work & print. A thumb drive will be the easier option. You can even buy one for less than $10 and give it to him. Make sure you get at least 8-16g capacity. Those files will be large.

You’ll have to pay for the post work which sucks because you already paid him but it will be worth it to have the photos. He should really pay but you may have to just deal with the loss. You’re albums on the other hand is going to be a tado, he should just refund the money and you can seek another to make them.

If you still don’t hear from him, could you ask your friend to get the photos from him?

Also, does your contract say how many weeks he has to get them back to you? Or did you talk to him about the timeframe you’d get them back? Also its just past the 8 week mark, which is usually the average waiting time. I’d be concerned he wasn’t getting back to me, but he could be working on the photos & just doesn’t want to talk to people. Some people isolate themselves & will still work.
