Fiance and I bought our first place (a condo) back in March. We loved the layout of the place, but it wasn’t done up as nicely as some brand new places we’d visited. So we decided to scrape the stucco ceilings, repaint, put in new floors, and decorate before moving in. I couldn’t resist posting a few photos!
Sorry for the crappy quality – I need my Fiance to take some pics with his nice camera!!
So far these are pics of just the living/dining area. We’ve been working simultaneously on the bedroom/office/bathrooms
The night we took possession: white old carpets, white walls, old dirty blinds
My mom and sister helping pull out the carpet and take down light switch panels:
Ceilings scraped and gyprock dust all over the place!!
First sneak peak at the new paint colour:
Balcony piled up with crap, and our view on a sunny day:
Floors finally in – but super dirty!
And its current state!
Curio and Corner of TV Stand
Dining Table – Still missing the chairs and the Chandelier!

So awesome! I LOVE the flooring! We are about to put new flooring in our place, may I ask what type it is?

it’s looking really good! your modern style seems to work really well with your building. i love that rug, it’s really bold but in a good not in your face kinda way. i totally noticed the plastic on your lampshades, though. hope you’re commiting to those beautious lamps, and ripping that plastic off! 🙂

Great job! Looks wonderful!

@Miss Seersucker: It’s actually laminate flooring from Costco. I think it was called Golden Select Flooring in Brazillian Walnut – a whole $1.22/sqft on sale. But I’m in Canada – not sure if you can get it elsewhere.
@simplifiedbride: I’m itching to get the plastic off as well! There is still a fair amount of dust around though, so we’re going to wait a BIT longer before ripping it off. Lamp shades are hard to clean! I wasn’t fully sold on the rug at first, but I think its really grown on me! We’ve picked a really neutral colour pallate, so I think it helps add some interest!

I think you did a great job!!! love the floors! I think the only thing missing is artwork for the walls, and you can make a great memory by getting something on your honeymoon! I hope you have many years of happiness in your new place. 🙂

@TealaB: O.M.G awesome! I love Costco and I’m LOVING the price! It looks so so so good! How is the quality? Have you noticed it scratching easy? Can you def. tell it’s laminate in person, because you sure can’t tell from the photos!! I am in love with your style. Def. very cool!

You guys have put so much work into it. It looks great, and I love the accent in the rug!

@Miss Seersucker: The quality is GREAT so far. I did a lot of research online before selecting it, and the reviews were great. Apparently its super durable. I can’t tell that it’s laminate – it has an attached underlay that stops it from having the ‘hollow’ feeling of laminate. It also came with different sized boards, grooves between the boards, and a bit of texture to it -all which makes it look more realistic. I’m no expert, but my parents had real hardwood and engineered hardwood when I was growing up, and I’m very happy with this laminate.
@SandyThePoet: Thank you!! We can’t wait to put up photos. The frame on our side table is currently just the stock photo, b/c we’re going to put in a honeymoon photo 🙂 We’re also going to do a large black/white framed collage of photos over the couch with different places we’ve visited together.

I just realized how crappy the paint colour photographed! In person, its a warm tan colour. I DEFINITELY need to send my Fiance in with his camera!!

Wow it looks great! It makes the room so modern. So do you mind me asking how much it cost for the entire project? Well just the floors. Did you do the work yourselves or hire someone?
We are planning on buying a home by the end of the year and if the cost to do something like this isn’t that bad, we could consider buying a house that may need some work with the floors.

Since we’re not quite done, we haven’t done any final tallies. But here are some numbers that may be of assistance:
Laminate: ~$800 for 675 square feet of laminate (I think it worked out to $1.22/sqft, it was on sale at costco)
Underlay: $200 (we had to use special soundproof underlay since it was a condo. The laminate also had underlay attached)
Installation of Floor and Baseboards: $850 (we planned on tackling this project ourselves, but FI’s dad offered to pay a contractor he knew to do it, since our life has been crazy hectic and he knew we might not get it done on time)
Baseboards: $250ish maybe? We ended up having to replace the old baseboards, since deeper ones were needed with laminate than carpet
Extra Mouldings: $150ish. Corner pieces for rounded corner, reducers for areas where it changes from laminate to tile, varnish to paint the reducers to match the floor.
Otherwise, we paid my sister’s Boyfriend or Best Friend $500 to scrape the ceilings, bought ~$500 of paint (really good quality stuff, but on sale for 40% off – we had everything painted), and paid a painter ~$2k to paint everything. Our condo is 975sqft. Hope that helps!

Your work looks great! Couldn’t even tell from the photos that it’s laminate 🙂 The rug and coordinating pillows are one of my favorite parts, they really pop!
