DS has never been a good sleeper. as a newborn, we had to rock him to sleep and he never wanted to take naps during the day. As he got older, I didn’t have to rock him, but still had to shush and pat him to sleep, which could take up to 30 minutes. At 4.5 months, he was still waking up 2-4 times a night and only napping in his swing. We were going on a vacation shortly, so I didn’t want to start anything new until we got back. The night after we got home, I started the Sleep Sense program. Now I must say firstly, that no matter what people say, it is basically a cry it out method. DS was 5.5 months old and we were comfortable with the method.
The one big change that we implemented was to ditch the soother for nighttime and naps. It was tough at first, and he was mad as hell, but I think he’s forgotten about it now. He’s had it for all of maybe 10 minutes during the day in the last week. I think losing the soother has made the biggest difference to his much improved night sleeping.
The first night he cried for 2 hours before falling asleep! Anyway, we’ve been doing it for a week now, and every night has gotten better. Last night he went down without crying at all at 1900 and slept through until 0500. Fed him, then he went back to sleep until 0740. What a difference!
We are currently on Day 7 and can’t believe how much life has changed. No more stress about putting DS down at night or making sure he gets enough sleep during the day. He’s much happier and so are we!
If anyone is interested, I’ve kept notes about what time I put DS to bed for nighttime and naps, how long he cried for, and what time he woke up. If anyone wants that info, PM me and I can send it to you.
