Hi Ladies. We are deciding to have a snack bar as favors for our wedding. We wanted to do different flavors of each. We planned to bag the cookies and let them pick up the ones they want. Our dilemma comes in with the popcorn. I have no idea what to do about this. There are several options we have come up with. If you ladies could help I would greatly appreciate it.
Option 1: Purchase already popped butter flavor popcorn and let them add the “seasonings” to the popcorn that is already individually bagged. I’m afraid that with the already popped popcorn that the flavoring won’t stick.
Option 2: Pop the popcorn at the reception with the popcorn machine. They can also add their own seasonings and will be bagging their own popcorn. My only drawback with this is that I don’t want my reception to smell like popcorn.
Option 3: Purchasing a couple different flavors (i.e. butter, caramel, cheese) and letting them add “add ins” such as M&Ms, peanuts and things.

@FutureMrsSIlas: How about having a machine that pops popcorn, then having a popcorn bar with candy, different seasonings, nuts, etc. to allow guests to customize as much or as little as they want? Would be fun for your guests! 🙂

The only thing that turns me off about the popcorn machine is the possibility of it smelling like popcorn the entire night.

That is true, those machines tend to spread a smell that isn’t easy to get rid of out of the air. 🙂 Here is a thought too that I found on a blog. They don’t have a machine, I think the people got the popcorn beforehand. But it was for something other than a wedding but it is cute nonetheless and goes along the lines of what I was suggesting.

I personally loved flavored popcorn and would be thrilled to have the option to add in treats as well!

The seasoning doesn’t stick to prepopped popcorn. For example, we have an air popper at home and even when it’s fresh and hot, it doesn’t stick because there’s no moisture from oil/butter/etc. So if you want them to use the powdered seasoning, you have to provide something in the form of sprays/pumps so the popcorn has an adhesive for the powder. The mix-ins will be fine but then they won’t stick either. It’ll be like trail mix.
Something else to consider is that popcorn can get stale quickly and soften quickly if it is exposed to humidity.
I would do either prepacked, flavored popcorn that is sealed by a professional popcorn company or pop as you go, and maybe locate the popper in an area away from the crowd so it’s not too corn-y smelling.

I love flavored popcorn, but fresh popcorn can’t really be beat. Can you have fresh with flavor options?

i voted for 2 or 3, but i understand not wanting the place to smell like popcorn. would it be possible to have the popcorn machine on a patio or something?
we also served popcorn at my wedding as a late night snack. we bought 2 popcorn makers and had it freshly popped, but my reception was outside, so we really didn’t have to worry about the smell being too overwhelming.

I am having a popcorn buffet at my wedding. I am getting my popcorn at a place called Popparazi and putting the popcorn in large bowls at the wedding. The popcorn is already pre-flavored and they have about 60 flavors to choose from like jalapeno, cheese, BBQ, cinnamon crunch etc. I was going to do a candy bar but then I realized that a light salty snack like popcorn goes better with people drinking alcohol than a station with sweets. Its also a great snack for the cocktail hour before dinner as well as after dinner. I would not bring a popcorn machine in. The whole place will smell of popcorn and a machine might look kind of cheesy. If I were you I would definately look to see if there are any gourmet popcorn places in your area with pre-flavored popcorn. I’m having about 7 types of flavors at my wedding.

Thanks so much ladiesfor all of your suggestions.
We do have a place down here that does pre flavored popcorn that I can check with.
Thanks for the link and suggestions.
Thanks. The bad part about that is the only place we would be able to do it would be outside of the building and I wouldnt want anyone to miss out on the party for popping or going to get popcorn.

Another bee did a popcorn bar at her reception, I remember it from her recaps!
Here’s the thread: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/pro-pics-are-in-09232012-pic-heavy#axzz2NRkWqRLJ
It looks like she had flavoured popcorn and regular with seasonings/mix ins – maybe you could check in with her and ask how she went about it? She’s a pretty regular poster. 🙂
I like option 1 personally.

I wouldn’t worry about people missing out. We had our bar outside (because we had cocktail hour outside) and we had our photobooth outside. We also had a fire pit outside. People enjoyed being able to go in and out and getting fresh air/using their phones/etc. The way our venue was set up was perfect for an indoor-outdoor entertaining space.
It’s not like they’re going to spend the entire 4 hours or whatever of the reception standing outside.
