trying to place the decade of that railing.  looks 70’s?

are you trying to do this yourself or hire a contractor/handy man?

i say, start off at home depot/lowes and see what styles of stair rails they offer and find one you like.

Can you put a baby gate at the bottom & top of the stairs to keep him from even having the opportunity to fall through?

LadySmurph:  They do sell railings or railing parts at Home Depot. I really like the look of glass and am thinking about doing that in our converted-to-a-master-bedroom attic.

Ideally to modernize the look, I would do a metal rail and tempered glass panel, but that is going to cost more than your budget.

I would take your pic, go to the home store and ask their suggestions for something temporary that would look nice and work with your budget.

For affordability, you could buy 2, two or three inch wide strips of flat metal that are the length of the staircase, paint them a fun color, and then fasten each one so they’re halfway up each side of the triangles.
