Hello again bees! The deeper I get into wedding planning the more questions I have!
So I am planning an outdoor wedding, and I am hoping to have my ceremony around one or two o clock so we have a nice long day to celebrate. The venue has a barn that we can do the processional from, and there is a cute little area between fields that feels like the natural place to have the ceremony. However, there are no trees or any sort of natural shade at this spot, and I am concerned that the sunlight in august at one or two o clock is going to be so overhead, all my pictures will have unflattering shadows, and Darling Husband and I will be squinting the whole time we’re saying our vows. I am not crazy about the idea of being under any sort of tent during the ceremony. Any bees that had outdoor ceremonies, any advice or input? Am I overthinking this? We will have some type of big arch with flowers and probably fabric, do you think this may provide enough shade? Thanks in advance!

You don’t necessarily need a traditional reception-style tent to provide shade for your guests. you can use fabric draped over a frame like this:
You can have a smaller version of this to shield you and your FH from the sun in your eyes. Scope out your spot and see if you can calculate (using the awesome power of google) where the sun will be in the sky at the time of your ceremony so you can intelligently place sun barriers to keep your eyes sun-free. a Pillar with a floral arrangement might do the trick, or you might want to opt for bringing in something larger.
As a guest, I also appreciate when hosts make the programs into fans so I can fan myself a bit. TBH, I wonder how distracting this is for the bride and groom with everyone waving their programs around, but I like it.

sweetteawifey : You don’t want to have the ceremony in the barn?

beckybee787 : that is so pretty! We will have a big pole tent for the reception, the only part where there wont be the option of cover is the 20 minute ceremony, but that is a great cover idea for the ceremony for us to be under! I am already planning on making the programs into fans, but I’m so glad to know that people will actually appreciate it! I was a little worried that people would just wonder why there were popsicle sticks glued to the programs haha
testyone : No, I considered it, but I worry that if I hold the ceremony in the barn, people won’t naturally flow out to the reception area in the yard like they would if the whole thing was outside. I would ideally like the barn to just be backup in the event of inclement weather 🙂

sweetteawifey : I don’t know where you live, or the wedding date but around here, it almost always rains the second weekend in August. People would flow out to the reception area, because you will lead them there, and anyway.. where there is food and beverage, there are (usually) people. Depending on the barn, there might be lovely light coming through. But if you want the ceremony in the outdoors, your photographer can use the shields used in photographer and film, or you could probably rent them. Have a great, and dry, wedding.
