You don’t necessarily need a traditional reception-style tent to provide shade for your guests. you can use fabric draped over a frame like this:

You can have a smaller version of this to shield you and your FH from the sun in your eyes. Scope out your spot and see if you can calculate (using the awesome power of google) where the sun will be in the sky at the time of your ceremony so you can intelligently place sun barriers to keep your eyes sun-free. a Pillar with a floral arrangement might do the trick, or you might want to opt for bringing in something larger.

As a guest, I also appreciate when hosts make the programs into fans so I can fan myself a bit. TBH, I wonder how distracting this is for the bride and groom with everyone waving their programs around, but I like it.

sweetteawifey :  I don’t know where you live, or the wedding date but around here, it almost always rains the second weekend in August.  People would flow out to the reception area, because you will lead them there, and anyway.. where there is food and beverage, there are (usually) people.  Depending on the barn, there might be lovely light coming through.  But if you want the ceremony in the outdoors, your photographer can use the shields used in photographer and film, or you could probably rent them.  Have a great, and dry, wedding.
