Hi all I am new here and need advice! My fiancé and I decided to have our wedding in late May 2020 with the hopes that here in Alberta, Canada everything will be blooming and green and warm enough for an outdoor wedding. However with warm weather comes the dreaded mosquitoes.
Have any of you used any type of natural repellant that covers a large area? Or am I doomed to be swatting flies and having miserable guests? I have my heart set on a backyard bash with bbq, yard games and a warm bonfire for the evening.

The bonfire should help with mosquitos some. At my outdoor wedding we left little baskets with bug spray around the venue and guests were able to use bug spray as they pleased.
Could you get some large citronella torches to put around the yard?

I think in May it should be fine bug-wise – what’s it like now? Will likely be pretty similar. That said, I did attend an outdoor Canadian wedding that was just ruined by the mosquitoes because the couple didn’t want to fog. They had a big bonfire where most of us ended up hiding out by, but the event was definitely ruined by the bugs. So if you’re looking at a date later in the summer, beware!

I’d talk to an extermintator. A friend has yearly BBQ’s and his property is on the edge of a wooded area. Right before his party, he has an exterminator come out to treat the yard, and part of the wooded area, for mosquitoes. I’m a magnet for mosquitoes, and have never been bit during one of his parties.

Thank you so much for posting this– I juat realized this will be a problem for me in a month too!
My immediate thoughr is to buy some citronella candles to put at strategic points (my venue has a river going through the middle, somewhere near that would be good) and provide a basket of bug spray.

Thank you guys, I hadn’t thought of citronella torches… That would be a very nice touch as well as good bug repellant.
It is also wild fire season here so depending on if it’s a wet spring or not determines if I will even be able to have torches or a fire 🙁
The wedding will be on my parents and brothers property and they are very adamant that there will be no chemical spraying, which is fine, their land, their rules.
Gahhhhhh maybe I should just rent a hall….
